Philadelphia 76ers Joel Embiid Undergoes Appendectomy Hours Before Sixers-Rockets Game

Man, the 76ers and their star player can’t seem to catch one single break. Joel Embiid’s unfortunate injury history has included: Playing through a knee injury that was later determined to be a torn meniscus. Embiid was also diagnosed with Bell’s Palsy during the first round of the playoffs against the Knicks, a series the Sixers lost 4-2. Now, there will be a new health entry to be incorporated in this series of events. On Thursday, the Philadelphia 76ers Joel Embiid undergoes an appendectomy hours before the Sixers-Houston Rockets game.

The plot to this situation began to thicken in the early afternoon after Philadelphia sports beat writer, Adam Aaronson reported that “the Sixers just ruled Joel Embiid OUT for tonight’s game against the Rockets. He has an illness.”

Just two hours later after Aaronson’s reporting, Philadelphia released an official statement regarding Embiid’s condition. The team stated,

“Joel Embiid has been diagnosed with appendicitis and will undergo surgery this afternoon in Houston.

Further updates will be provided as appropriate.”

It’s unclear when Embiid would be able to return to the court. Embiid, 32, is averaging 26.9 points and 7.7 rebounds in 38 games this season.

Jeff Stotts who is an injury analyst for SMART and Rotowire shared the following report after news of Joel’s diagnosis and surgery broke. Stotts says,

“Joel Embiid Medical Update: Appendectomies are relatively uncommon in the NBA but have occurred with players like Grant Hill as well as OG Anunoby undergoing the procedure. The average time lost for in-season surgery is ~23 days (10.2 games). Median = 18 days.”

So then, how will Philadelphia be affected? Can this organization make the postseason? Well, Wednesday night’s matchups really made things interesting for the playoffs picture. Orlando won last night. Atlanta lost, opening the door for maximum chaos in the Eastern Conference playoff race.

Therefore, the Sixers may need to finish 3-0 to make the playoffs. Joel Embiid won’t play in what is far and away the toughest game left on the schedule. This makes the Rockets game on Thursday evening important, the Sixers need to win as they fight to avoid the Eastern Conference play-in tournament next week. Very interesting developments as this season concludes, but we wish a speedy recovery for Joel Embiid.
