Pelicans Zion Williamson Out For Play-In Game With Hamstring Injury
What a blow for New Orleans. In the midst of an effort to head towards competing for a championship; the Pelicans Zion Williamson will be out for the play-in game on Friday with a hamstring injury.
As we all know, it takes a village, staying healthy is everything to a team. Teams win championships, not individuals. Therefore, losing one part of the equation, or suddenly having a significant piece of the team formula out of the picture, can be devastating.
Unfortunately, this is the case with the Pelicans. ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski confirms the news about the Williamson leg injury. He reports:
“ESPN Sources: Pelicans F Zion Williamson’s (left hamstring) is out for Friday’s Play-In Tournament elimination game vs. Sacramento and will be evaluated again in coming weeks. Huge blow for New Orleans.”
Furthermore, NBA insider Will Guillory from The Athletic also sums up the deflating feeling New Orleans fans are most likely experiencing. Will mentions,
“Zion Williamson just left the building wasn’t walking with a limp or anything. Didn’t have a visible wrap on his leg either.
Pelicans fans waited 5 years to see a game like this from Zion Williamson. It was dominant. It was clutch. It was against Anthony Davis. Then, outta nowhere, it was over. How Zion’s dream night turned into a nightmare and now leaves NOLA on the brink.”
Pelicans Zion Williamson Out For Play-In Game With Hamstring Injury
Hamstring problems are always a concern in the NBA. Plus, they’re common. Between 2016 and 2021, 210 hamstring injuries were identified in the NBA.
Former NBA player and sports personality, Shaquille O’Neal, is no stranger to hamstring trouble. During his career it is something he had to deal with and something that would leave his team worried. For instance, while playing for the Miami Heat, Shaq was once again plagued by such an injury.
So then, no one really was surprised that Shaq had a thought after Zion’s exit. Regarding O’Neal’s assessment of the situation, Athlon Sports reports,
“Upon learning [the] news, Shaquille O’Neal was left shocked by the fact that Williamson was unable to finish down the stretch, implying that the superstar should have dealt with it and returned to action.
‘Rub some Icy Hot on that thing, Chico,’ Shaq said, shouting out the company he’s been partnered with for over 20 years. Charles Barkley chimed in, saying ‘I’m not sure I would have came out the game.’
Injuries have proven to be an issue for Williamson throughout his young career, and Tuesday night did nothing to convince fans that the former Duke player can stay healthy when needed the most.”
Staying injury free is certainly important. No doubt this latest incident is definitely hard for Pelican fans. Zion is a huge factor and loss for them. However, we hope the best for Williamson, and that he heals up soon.
