And the game was TIGHT as the Spurs narrowly escaped with victory (seriously, New Orleans grabbed the lead with less than 30 seconds to go). Furthermore, the Pelicans Derik Queen put on quite the show versus Stephon Castle and company as his team barely came up short; being defeated at home, 135-132. The Pelicans Derik Queen became just the 5th player in NBA history to drop a 30-point triple-double before turning 21.

Great list right? And so far Derik gets to thoroughly enjoy his bragging rights solo. Queen is the first rookie to score a triple double this season. Additionally, he is the 3rd rookie in Pelicans history to record a triple double.
Moreover, against the Spurs Queen just looked like a player that’s built different. In the third quarter alone he put up 21 PTS, 4 REB and 5 AST. Plus, get this… 100% FG. Ridiculous. This means Queen is the youngest player in NBA history to have a quarter with 20+ PTS and no misses or turnovers. Also, possesses the most AST by a center in their first 25 career games since the merger.

The extremely humble and talented Derik took a moment to talk to the media after his historic performance. He of course was disappointed after the loss, but was proud of his efforts against San Antonio and the work he has put into his game. Regarding his historic night (33 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists, 4 blocks), the Pelicans rookie stated:
“It means a lot. Pretty good for a person that didn’t have a preseason, was hurt, a lot of people doubted… I had some doubts myself…”
Well, Monday’s thriller has most likely increased Derik’s confidence that he can put his team on his back and be what New Orleans needs. Despite the loss, Derik Queen posted a career-high in points and helped his team comeback in a game they were down by 25. Queen is definitely talented we are excited to see him hoop in the future.
