Pele Soccer: His Final Open Letter to Fans

It’s been tough. For a minute now, we all have had to say goodbye to some absolute legends in sports. From sportscasters to iconic GOATS on the field; each one is another hard tug on the heart strings. The latest bigger-than-life entity to fall? The one and only, Pelé. Yes, the Pele soccer great that won not one, but THREE World Cup championships!

All on top of a achieving other notable feats. Such as being named FIFA’s Football Player of the Century; and a little record… the Leading Goal Scorer of ALL TIME (1,283). Not bad King Pelé, not bad.

To his amazing and enduring fans, Pelé left these profound words:

”Open letter about my dream Life, is opportunity. What we do with it is up to each of us. We’ve hit and we’ve hit.

In victory we get celebration. In defeat, you learn. Life is always generous and offers new beginnings. With each passing day, we begin a new path. And in this cycle, we feed dreams that never die, regardless of the stumbling blocks of the journey.

This goes for everyone, but when your dream is to be a footballer; the opportunities are much rarer and dreams much longer. The stumbling blocks are not more painful than the one in anyone’s life. However, they are judged by a lot more people, aren’t they? And to be fair, the victories are a lot more celebrated too.

Love moves us… I don’t know what makes us so crazy about football. Whether it’s the love of the union of true friendships around sport; the goal scream or forgetting all the problems we face; even if it’s just for 90 minutes. Maybe the love of fighting poverty, hunger and drugs; that football takes over in so many communities that make up such a vast country. There are many virtues of the most beautiful sport. Even more so here in Brazil.

No matter the reason, what matters is that this fan brought us together, at a time when we so needed unity. And my dream is that this feeling between us and for our country is not just a passenger. This goal may seem impossible.

However, when I was a boy, I had another dream that also seemed like it [was impossible]: winning the World Cup for my father. Speaking of dreams, don’t think our athletes’ dreams are over. I know they still dream about the sixth star just like I did when I was a boy.
