Paul Skenes Has Won the 2025 Cy Young Award in the National League

Paul Skenes had just TWO Division 1 scholarship offers out of high school. Flash forward to present day, he’s been the NL 2024 Rookie of the Year; starred in and covered MLB The Show and oh yeah, now Paul Skenes has also won the 2025 Cy Young Award in the National League. The man is unstoppable.

People constantly talk about the sophomore slump, especially after a rookie has a standout season. However, Skenes not only didn’t even remotely slump, he picked up where he left off in 2024 and DOMINATED during the entire 2025 season. Skenes posted a 1.97 ERA, 216 strikeouts, over 187.2 IP and wins the Cy Young Award in just his second MLB season. Amazing.

Furthermore, Paul’s big “W” is historic. The Pittsburgh Pirates posted a graphic explaining the historical significance of Skenes’ accomplishment within the Pirates organization. The ball club reveals,

“Skenes is the third pitcher in Pirates history to take home Cy Young Award honors, joining Vernon Law in 1960 and Doug Drabek in 1990. Skenes, who won the National League Rookie of the Year Award in 2024, has recorded a 1.96 ERA through the first 55 starts/of his Major League career: Skenes is also just the second pitcher in Major League history to win the Rookie of the Year Award and the Cy Young Award in consecutive seasons.”

Yes, the Pirates superstar is on a roll. Paul Skenes also becomes just the 8th pitcher in MLB history to win BOTH the Rookie of the Year and Cy Young Awards, joining:

Don Newcombe
Tom Seaver
Rick Sutcliffe
Fernando Valenzuela
Dwight Gooden
Justin Verlander
Jacob deGrom

Lastly, Skenes made some history along with the 2025 American League winner. Tarik Skubal (AL) and Paul Skenes (NL) started the All-Star Game AND won the Cy Young Awards in 2025. Since the Cy Young began being awarded for each league in 1967, only one other duo has accomplished this: Randy Johnson and Roger Clemens in 2001!

Therefore, Paul Skenes finds himself in all sorts of good company. Speaking of being in good company… Paul Skenes won this year’s NL Cy Young Award UNANIMOUSLY. He is the first NL pitcher to do so since Sandy Alcantara in 2022.
