Paul Skenes Continues to Impress Against Rays —MLB History First 25 Games
He is a video game cover star for MLB The Show 25. The 2024 Rookie of the Year in the National League. Plus was a 2024 All-Star. Why? He’s a monster on the mound. And this season Paul Skenes continues to impress against the Tampa Bay Rays with seven lights out innings while making MLB History in his first 25 games.
We haven’t seen much out of this Ace because we are still in the beginning fringes of the season. However, what we have witnessed is more of the same out of Skenes. Straight up dominant performance and tactical pitching talent.
Case in point, Paul faced off against the Tampa Bay Rays, in Game 2 of the series. The Rays basically had no answers for Skenes hurling through seven innings. Especially, as he tossed 97mph darts in their direction. Pirates beat writer, Noah Hiles, summed up Skenes’ outing. He says,
“Take a bow, Paul Skenes. What an effort from the Pirates ace. Seven innings of one-run ball (And that run was unearned). Retired the side in the seventh with just 15 pitches. Final two outs were Ks. The last strikeout came after he fell behind in the count 3-0.”
Skenes is definitely a difference maker on the Pirates. The ball club was currently enduring a multi-game losing streak before Paul hit the hill. But thanks to him being able to keep Tampa’s bats cold; Skenes got his first win of the season and helped Pittsburgh snap the streak and get a much needed victory.

Furthermore, Paul Skenes is also continuing to be historically good. Senior baseball writer Mathew Brownstein spoke regarding Skenes’ strikeouts and ERA during just his first 25 games. Brownstein reveals,
“Paul Skenes has now made 25 starts in his major league career and owns a 1.92 ERA with 183 strikeouts. He’s the only pitcher to record 175+ strikeouts while posting a sub-2.00 ERA over his first 25 big league games in MLB history.”
Wow. Skenes is a part of a young crop of MLB stars like Jackson Merrill, Gunnar Henderson, Bobby Witt Jr., Jackson Chourio and Elly De La Cruz who are electrifying the masses with their extraordinary play. The future looks bright and this season shall be entertaining.
