Patriots Mauled In The Meadowlands On Thursday Night

The Patriots won the coin toss and deferred so the Jets got the ball first to start the game. And that was about all they won in the game. Instead the Patriots were mauled in the Meadowlands on Thursday Night Football. On the first drive, Aaron Rodgers had good pocket protection and moved the ball down the field. But things bogged down due to a holding penalty on OL Morgan Moses and Jets couldn’t overcome the 1st & 20. The Patriots got the ball and immediately went three and out.

By the end of the second quarter the Patriots had 3 first downs and the Jets had 17. The Jets were averaging 7.2 yards per play and the Patriots 1.8. However the Patriots did kick a field goal in the second quarter, partially helped by a holding penalty against the Jets which was a valid penalty. With about seven seconds left on the clock the Jets attempted a 45-yard field goal which was wide left. The Jets were leading at the half by a score of 3-14.

Throughout the first half the Patriots’ defense was missing tackles and leaving receivers wide open. Or if they did tackle they didn’t wrap up the player allowing them to gain more yards. Despite sacking Aaron Rodgers once, he had plenty of time and protection in the pocket. Jacoby Brissett would have liked to have that kind of protection behind his young, inexperienced offensive line.

The Jets scored back-to-back touchdowns and dominated the time of possession. Whereas the Patriots had a total of 40 yards for the first half. Not surprising since the Jets kept the pressure on Brissett.

Opening the third quarter the Patriots quickly went three and out. Whereas the Jets picked up where they left off. Moving down the field going 66 yards in 12 plays they scored their third touchdown. Brissett was not so fortunate. It seemed on every third down he was getting pancaked with no chance to throw or run the ball.

In the first two weeks the Patriots were great on tackling. But for this game the Next Gen Stat was 13 missed tackles and 100 yards lost. Drake Maye came on the field with a little over four minutes left in the game. He provided a bit of a spark for the offense. Nevertheless, the final score was 3-24 and it felt like it could have been much worse.

More good news for the Jets is this is their first home win against the Patriots since 2015.
