Patriots Locked Up Safety Jabrill Peppers
It’s been a good week for NFL safeties. Julian Love signed an extension with the Seattle Seahawks. Now the Patriots have locked up their safety Jabril Peppers. As reported by ESPN Insider Field Yates, “the Patriots and S Jabrill Peppers are finalizing a 3-year extension with a base value of $24M and worth up to $30M, per source. A reward for their best defensive player in 2023.” Clearly Peppers has made an impression on the Patriots brass.
Peppers entered the league in 2017 as a first round draft pick of the Cleveland Browns. However in March 2019, Peppers was part of a blockbuster trade for Odell Beckham Jr. The New York Giants acquired Peppers, Kevin Zietler, the Browns’ first-round pick, and their second and third round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft in exchange for Odell Beckham Jr. and Olivier Vernon. Peppers played well in 2019 but suffered a season-ending transverse process fracture. He bounced back in 2020 but was placed on injured reserve in 2021 after suffering a torn ACL and a high ankle sprain in Week 7.
However, the injuries didn’t scare the New England Patriots who signed Peppers to a one-year contract on April 4, 2022. That year he played in all 17 games and finished with 60 total tackles and one fumble recovery and played on special teams. The Patriots then signed Peppers to a two-year deal. Former head coach Belichick said, “I thought Jabrill had several big plays for us and physical plays, so yeah, good to see that production out there, have him out there. He helped us in the kicking game and certainly helped us out defensively against the run and the pass and on the pass rush. Just good to have him on the field.”

Peppers impressed one of the greatest NFL head coaches, and has also won over current Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo. Mayo told reporters, “I am very happy for Peppers and for his family and also for our team and the organization. He really embodies everything that we want on the field. He’s very selfless, he’s out there flying around all the time, and it’s good to get that deal done.”
Peppers stabilized the secondary and had his best season last year. He posted two interceptions, eight passes defended, one forced fumble, a sack and 78 total tackles. So they nailed down a deal to keep him with the team for the next few years. Therefore, Peppers joins a long line of Patriots players that have been retained by the team like David Andrews, Kendrick Bourne, and Josh Uche. Will they work on extending Matt Judon next?
