Patriots And Rhamondre Stevenson Agreed To New Extension

Running backs always have to fight to get a fair contract. Teams are always disinclined to extend running backs, viewing it as high-risk. But it was reported today by multiple outlets that the New England Patriots and Rhamondre Stevenson agreed to a new extension. Stevenson was entering into the fifth year of his contract and the Patriots pulled the trigger by offering an extension.  According to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, “he gets 4-year for $36M on the extension. The deal includes $17M of guaranteed money.” He further added that he will get, “….an $8M signing bonus, plus there are a total of $12M available in incentives based on reaching at least 1,400 yards and becoming a Pro Bowler or All-Pro.

The new extension makes him now the seventh-highest-paid running back in the NFL. He had a breakout season in 2022 piling up 1,461 yards from scrimmage (1,040 rushing yards and 421 receiving yards). However, the Patriots hit rock bottom in 2023 where nothing seemed to work well on the offensive side of the ball. Stevenson’s production took a hit. Mostly due to poor blocking but also only playing in 12 games due to injury. But if the offensive line improves, then there’s no reason that he can’t be a productive lead-back.

Showing his willingness to be the best he can be he spent time studying Nick Chubb’s film. Why you ask? Because he wants to better understand new OC Alex Van Pelt’s system. That’s certainly a sign of a team player. Also, the Patriots have been signing some of their veteran players to have a foundation to build upon. Some of those players include Hunter Henry, Kendrick Bourne, and David Andrews. The extension makes Stevenson part of that core now. Hopefully it can stabilize their offense and lead to improvement

First time head coach, Jerod Mayo, praised the running back saying he is, “one of the better backs in the league. I’m excited to see what he does this season. He’s earned everything he gets. He is our starting running back.” With his ability to be a threat as a runner or a receiver he is sure to have a heavy workload in the upcoming season.

And since the Patriots have roughly $45 million in cap space currently, they literally could afford to take this risk. Thus, the timing worked out quite well for Stevenson. He probably can’t wait to get back out on the field and prove his worth. I’m looking forward to seeing what he can do, too.
