Patrick Ewing and Georgetown University

Patrick Ewing and Georgetown University Parts Ways After 6 Seasons

The iconic Patrick Ewing and Georgetown University parts ways and it is a decision that is proving to be bittersweet. Ewing is one of the greatest players to ever touch, dribble and shoot a basketball; his game acumen, talents and stats continue to burn a bright hole in the game’s history books. For instance, in 1996 and 2021, the man was selected as being one of 50 and 75 best and greatest NBA players of all time!

While in college at Georgetown; Ewing helps the Hoyas get not one, but 3 titles. And does what only a great can do… get her done as a Head coach as well! Yes, Patrick in 2021 became the first person to win the Big East Tournament as both a player and coach. Outstanding.

Furthermore, not to mention Ewing is a not one, but TWO TIME inductee into the Basketball Hall of Fame. For his individual accomplishments; as well as for his contributions in the Olympics. Uhm… can you say, The Dream Team?

However, even with all of that; there comes a snag. A kink in the armor that refuses to unravel and disappear, so that we may not have to notice it. You see, being great, does not mean great in all things. No, talent on the court does not always translate into coaching success or longevity. They are two different beasts to tame and slay.

While Ewing’s championship in 2021 cannot be denied; nonetheless, neither can his overall stats be either. Patrick’s Georgetown tenure ends having a 75-108 record; with just one winning season. Like seeing a bright light grow ever dim in the passing of time.

From 2017 to 2023 there just are not enough positives to keep Patrick’s coaching prospects alive at Georgetown. As a player he is instrumental. As a coach, it is an unfortunate decision that has to come to realization.

However, both parties split on good terms. And both Ewing and Georgetown issue statements to confirm this. Georgetown states,

“Patrick Ewing is the heart of Georgetown basketball. [We are] deeply grateful to Coach Ewing for his vision, his determination, and for all that he has enabled Georgetown to achieve. Over these past six years, he was tireless in his dedication to his team and the young men he coached; and we will be forever grateful to Patrick for his courage and his leadership in our Georgetown community.”

Well said. Nevertheless, is this the end of the ‘experiment’, as some may well say? Will Patrick Ewing find himself as a HC in the future? Well, as another saying goes, “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.”

It is too early call as of now. But, Patrick does not seem to be over the coaching bug. In his own words, “Hey look. I am proud of being a Georgetown Hoya. This institution has been great to me over the years. I’d be honored to comeback as the coach here. That’s it. Thank you.”
