Calling all Phantom of the Opera fans! Yes it’s time for another Paris 2024 Summer Olympics Destination – Palais Garnier. Also known as Opera National de Paris or the Opéra Garnier.

This is definitely a Paris attraction you will want to add to your France bucket list; especially, if you are a literature enthusiast who loved the famed story by Gaston Leroux. A dark romantic thriller, later made into a world renown Broadway musical by iconic composer, Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Yes, Phantom of the Opera enjoys close ties to the Palais Garnier. What is true and what is fiction? Well, for starters let’s discuss the chandelier.

In the story, the gorgeous chandelier falls and comes crashing down into an unfortunate bystander. This occurrence is in fact true. The dazzling and luxurious chandelier of the Paris Opera house did in fact dramatically fall and take the life of a victim in the vicinity.

Nevertheless, what about that underground river beneath the Opera house that the Phantom sailed down in order to reach his “residence?” This river too is not fiction, but real! There is an underground river or “water tank” under the Opera National de Paris; and due to this and other reasons many believe that the story of the phantom terrorizing the Opera might just be real.

The Opera Garnier is an architectural gem which took about fourteen years to complete. Building began in 1861, completing in 1875. Originally, the name of the Opera Garnier is the “Salle des Capucines” due to its location within the 9th district of Paris. However, in time this gorgeous Paris monument came to possess a name that honors its architect, Charles Garnier.

Furthermore, the Palais Garnier housed the wondrous Paris Opera till 1989. During this year the Bastille Opera House is built. Therefore, now the Opera Garnier is mainly utilized for ballets.

Palais Garnier is a historic treasure that is as famous as The Lourve and Eiffel Tower; as well as other Paris destinations. Fortunately, many of these attractions are going to be amazing highlights during the 2024 Olympics! Paris officials are making it clear that their goal is to take sports out of the stadium and typical arenas; and into the electric Paris atmosphere.
