Panthers And Derrick Brown Agreed To Contract Extension
You may not be familiar with the name. Being on a 2-14 can cause a player to fade into the background. Nevertheless, the Carolina Panthers and Derrick Brown have agreed to a contract extension. Although Brown may not be a household name, the Panthers recognized his value and importance to the team.
As evidenced by the four-year, $96 million extension with more than $63 million in guarantees. The new deal will make Brown the fourth highest paid defensive tackle in the NFL. And regarding payment of defensive players here’s an interesting fact from ESPN’s Bill Barnwell:
“In 2014, the top ten edge rushers made 44% more than the top ten defensive tackles. 14 edge rushers were making $10 million+, but only four DTs. Now, the top ten edge rushers make 6% more than the top ten defensive tackles. 14 edge rushers make $20m+ and 10 DTs do, too.”
So the defensive tackle position is gaining ground on the edge rushers in terms of how much money they earn. And guys like Derrick Brown are a reason for that pay gap getting smaller. Brown has garnered several interesting stats to prove how valuable to the Panthers’ defense.
In 2023 he had two sacks and 103 tackles seven of which resulted in loss of yards. The 103 tackles are a league record for tackles by a defensive lineman. Further, he is good against the run game posting 79 run stops. Pressuring the quarterback is also a strong point despite being double-teamed on 42% of snaps. His performance is so exceptional that Pro Football Focus has included him with the likes of Aaron Donald, Quinnen Williams, and Dexter Lawrence.

Defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero, had nothing but praise for Brown, “He’s had a heck of a year. He’s been so disruptive. I don’t think it’s arguably — I think he’s been the best run defender in the NFL this year. He’s done a heck of a job rushing the quarterback and creating pressures, the interception, the batted balls. There’s been so much production. The leadership. He’s been instrumental in everything that we’ve done.”
Brown is a former 2020 first round pick and has already proven himself. So much so that he earned his first Pro Bowl nod in 2023. As he was entering the final year of his rookie deal the Panthers wanted to keep the foundation of their defense in place. Therefore, they worked out a deal that will keep Brown for several years.
This looks to be a great deal for the Panthers and Brown.
