And the first pick is in! UConn’s Paige Bueckers goes number one overall in 2025 WNBA Draft. This decision on the part of the Dallas Wings was not really a surprise. Most assumed whoever got the first pick in this year’s draft would snatch up Bueckers with lightening speed and for good reason. SHE IS PHENOMENAL.
For kicks let us just review a few of Paige’s college career achievements. Consider the following:
- 3rd UConn player with 3,000 points, 500 REB and 509 AST in career (Moore and Taurasi the others)
- 2,439 Points (third all-time at UConn)
- 2021 National College Player of the Year
- Three-time First-Team AP All-American
- Career with UConn: 19.8 PPG (school record)
- 6th UConn player selected first overall (no other school has more than 3)
- 2025 NCAA Champion
That last bullet point is a big one, everyone likes a champion. And when you peer at Paige’s stats during March Madness, basketball fans continue to be in awe. Bueckers career in the NCAA Tournament led to her putting up 477 points; which puts Paige third all-time. In the 2025 NCAA tourney alone, Bueckers scored 24.8 PPG shooting 53% FG and 48% 3-PT FG. So then, Paige knows her targets and she hits them.
Also, OFF the court Paige is building her brand efficiently. Being rewarded with sponsorship after sponsorship. In fact, Bueckers was the first college athlete to launch a player edition shoe with Nike. And now with her going to the WNBA no doubt this will open even more opportunities to this talented young star.
Nevertheless, this big night for Paige Bueckers has some awesome basketball historical significance. She joins a great list of fellow NCAA champions who have not only won a championship; but they went on to be drafted first in their respective drafts. Yes, Bueckers is the 6th player to win a National championship and be drafted first overall in the same year.
