Padres Vs Dodgers: Historically Outscoring Opponents in 6th or Later Over 4-Games
The 2023 Padres may have underperformed; however, the 2024 version of the organization is looking a lot better. There are flaws, yet, you can’t deny some of the results and stats that are coming from the ball club. One occurred during the second Padres Vs Dodgers matchup of the 24’ season, in Game 1.
Opta by StatsPerform reported on how the San Diego Padres are displaying dominance late in games. Especially, when you begin observing them in the 6th inning. Opta reports,
“The Padres in the 6th inning or later over their last 4 games:
Runs: Padres 21, opponents 0
HR: Padres 8, opponents 0Never before in MLB history had a team outscored its opponents 20-0 (or better) and outhomered them 8-0 (or better) in the 6th or later over a 4-game span.”
Wild. Moreover, during Game 1 of the division rivals series; audiences got to see a shining example of this statistic. While Manny Machado got the scoring started with a huge home run blast to left field. Shohei Ohtani and Mookie Betts helped to answer back with dingers of their own; bumping the Dodgers up to a 7-3 lead on the scoreboard.
However, that is all the scoring Los Angeles would have in this particular game. They would stay at 7 runs; which is still extremely elite and impressive. Yet, in the seventh inning San Diego would spring back to life.
Padres Vs Dodgers: Historically Outscoring Opponents in 6th or Later Over 4-Games
Xander Bogaert’s sacrifice RBI brings the Padres within 2 (5-7). Then, big man Fernando Tatis Jr. comes to the plate. One meatball from Vesia later and El Niño obliterates the ball, while tying up the game. San Diego’s rookie, Jackson Merrill; apart of this season’s “Jackson 3” puts the period on the game with a single in extra innings that scores the winning run.
As one can see, unlike in ‘23, the Padres are finding ways to come from behind or expand their lead in the last half of the game. And it’s not a flash in a pan situation. In the same week as the Dodgers series, the Padres came from behind to beat the Chicago Cubs; scoring 7 runs late in the game; all in one inning.
This new side of the Padres is amazing to behold. This is a team that has lost Juan Soto, Josh Hader, Blake Snell, and Steven Wilson among many others. A team for most of the offseason only had Tatis penned in as the team’s outfield. Yet, here they are hanging in there with tough competition and winning close games; and ones where they are behind. A new era indeed that is certainly entertaining and thrilling to watch.
