More moves, more moves. The San Diego Padres sign Woo Suk Go and are in agreement with the Korean reliever on a 2-yr, $4.5M contract. Excellent deal for the Pads payroll, on a guy with much value.

Nonetheless, one of our favorite Korean baseball writers, Jeeho Yoo, had plenty to share about this latest news involving Go and the Padres ball club. Yoo reports,

“LG Twins closer Woo-Suk Go took an early Wednesday afternoon flight out of Korea to U.S. Nearing a deal with Padres, per Jon Heyman.
Go is married to younger sister of new San Francisco Giants outfielder Jung-Hoo Lee. About to become 1st brothers-in-law from Korea to play in MLB.

LG Twins just announced they will allow closer Woo-Suk Go to sign with Padres via posting. Before Go was posted in December, the Twins had said they would only let him leave if the money was right. KBO teams receive “release fee” from MLB clubs for losing players via posting.

Woo-Suk Go debuted in ’17, became the closer for the LG Twins in ’19. From 2019-2023, Go led all KBO closers with 139 saves & 2.39 ERA, and had 2nd most Ks with 334. In Go and Yuki Matsui, Padres will have 2 of the best closers from Korea and Japan.

Woo-Suk Go told the LG Twins about Padres offer Tuesday night (Korean time). The Twins FO wasn’t happy with the offer at first (the larger his deal, the more the “release” fee for them). But the owner gave Go the green light, wanting to grant Go his wish to play in MLB.”

So what are some details about Woo Suk Go’s contract with San Diego? As mentioned it is for 2 years and over $4 million.

Furthermore, Yoo also reveals the KBO club’s cut. Jeeho states,

“If that’s the final number indeed ($4.5 million), then Go’s KBO club, LG Twins, will get $900,000 in release fee from the Padres (20% of the deal).
The fee is: 20% of the first $25 million in guaranteed value, 17.5% of the next $25 million, and 15% on all amounts above $50 million.”
