Seriously, the Padres never cease (no pun intended); to keep things interesting. Just about 2 seasons ago in 2022, AJ Preller and company stunned all of baseball by acquiring lefty big boy bat, Juan Soto right at the trade deadline. All in a quest to fulfill the city of San Diego and now the late Peter Seidler’s ultimate dream. To bring a World Series championship to the Padres ball club and their fans. The “tradition” seems to be continuing as the brown and gold now make waves by trading for Dylan Cease.
All during spring training Cease had been on the minds of many teams. With several franchises being in need of affordable and controllable pitching. San Diego had exactly what the Sox was looking for and a deal got done.
However, this trade and decision followed the Padres usual pattern. They DO NOT leak. Everyone finds out what the Padres have reportedly traded for at the same time.
Furthermore, San Diego is wasting no time letting their fans know about the exciting news. Via social media the franchise states,
“Welcome to San Diego, Dylan! We have acquired RHP Dylan Cease from the Chicago White Sox.”

Sports journalists Jeff Passan and Jon Morosi were among the first to report on the Padres/ White Sox trade. Passan revealed,
BREAKING: The San Diego Padres are finalizing a trade to acquire right-hander Dylan Cease from the Chicago White Sox, sources tell ESPN.
Nevertheless, the painful part of any trade is what a team must give up in order to make it happen. Therefore, what did San Diego have to send over to the White Sox in Chicago? As part of the deal, the Padres are sending prospect pitchers: Drew Thorpe (their #5 prospect) Jairo Iriarte (#8 prospect), Samuel Zavala and bullpen arm Stephen Wilson to Chicago.
Yet, the Padres were not the only team in the mix for Cease. The Yankees, Rangers, Red Sox and a few other ball clubs were rumored to be interested in Dylan. However, the Padres are the team to get a trade done.
Furthermore, Cease appears to replace Blake Snell’s spot in the Padres’ rotation. Thus, giving them needed innings pitched; with the potential to contend for top pitching honors having finished 2nd in AL Cy young voting in 2022.

With 2 years of team control left the Padres are excited to solidify their starting rotation with a workhorse to go behind Yu Darvish and Joe Musgrove who are coming off of injury riddled seasons; and seamlessly pitch in a staff with Michael King who only has 8 career starts and knuckleballer, Matt Waldron.
What else does this move indicate for the Padres? Well, they haven’t spent much money this off-season but this move proves that they are still in it to win it in 2024 .
Bernie Wilson of the Associated Press gives some thoughts on to why San Diego felt Dylan Cease is a difference maker for their team. Wilson mentions,
“AJP (AJ Preller) says Dylan Cease ‘is a power pitcher that can punch you out. When you look at guys who can dominate a game or a season, he’s on a short list of guys who can do that. Adding really quality starting pitching, that’s always very attractive. We want to get to a situation where every single day we’re throwing out somebody that we feel good about the matchup and I think Dylan Cease helps us get there, for sure.’
Padres are flying to Seoul tonight; will decide in next 24 hrs if he’ll join them there. He probably will.”
Man… what a blockbuster trade. And what a move for the Padres for swooping in and grabbing Cease. Can’t wait to see them in action this year; and as they open the season in Korea in a fun division rival series against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
