Padres’ Mason Miller Throws Immaculate Inning Versus the Baltimore Orioles
It’s not easy being perfect as a MLB pitcher. But when you witness a hurler achieve perfection it’s absolutely magical and incredible. That’s exactly what occurred on Wednesday as the San Diego Padres’ Mason Miller threw an immaculate inning versus the Baltimore Orioles.
The historical moment occurred in the top of the eighth inning. The Padres being down two runs needed their reliever to come in and shutdown the Orioles hot hitting streak. And that is what Miller was able to accomplish.
In case you forgot what an Immaculate inning is or you’re new to baseball. The pitcher faces three batters. And strikes each one out using just three pitches.
How rare is this feat? According to Major League Baseball it is estimated to happen roughly once every 36,229 innings pitched, making it significantly rarer than a no-hitter or a perfect game in terms of frequency. For instance, a perfect game (which requires 27 consecutive outs) is more common than an immaculate inning, with odds of around 1 in 20,000. Nonetheless, the league adds though, “While the “immaculate inning” isn’t nearly as rare as it once was — there were none from 1929-52 and seven alone in 2022 — any pitcher who can plow through a big league lineup on nine straight strikes deserves a special place in the record book.”

Yes, the modern game has seen more of these types of innings from flamethrowers. In fact, the number of recorded immaculate innings has risen significantly in recent decades. For example, between 1876 and 1988, there were only 30, but 55 were recorded between 2010 and 2024 alone.
But as the MLB makes clear, any pitcher that is able to pitch their way out of an inning with just nine pitches; deserves accolades. So then, Mason Miller can be extremely proud. He not only made Major League Baseball history (121st) but San Diego history. Miller is just the second Padre to toss an immaculate inning. And it has been over 20 years. Making Miller the first Padres immaculate inning since Brian Lawrence in 2002. Interestingly, Brian Lawrence’s immaculate inning was also against the Orioles. Therefore, history once again repeats itself.
Oh yeah… one more piece of historical significance occurred during this game. The Padres were unable to pull off the victory. But Baltimore got the win, in fact they swept San Diego. This is the first time in Orioles history that they have swept a west team on the road. A very interesting game indeed.
