Padres Injury Update on Jackson Merrill and Xander Bogaerts Plus Michael King

Well, at least it is not the wrist. San Diego received some pretty good news as well as some setbacks regarding their short stop, a starting pitcher and their center fielder. Therefore, let’s quickly recap who is healing, who is near to coming back to compete and what player is now going to miss some time. Here’s a brief Padres injury update on Jackson Merrill and Xander Bogaerts plus Michael King.

Beginning with Xander, on Friday afternoon unfortunately the SD franchise had an announcement revealing that Bogaerts would not be participating in the Twins series or any immediate matchups coming up. The Padres revealed,

“We have placed SS Xander Bogaerts on the 10-day IL with a non-displaced fracture in his left foot and recalled INF Mason McCoy from Triple-A El Paso.”

The Padres expect that Bogaerts has a chance to be back to contribute during the postseason. Due to the type of injury Xander has sustained. According to the Cleveland Clinic, “Non-displaced fractures are still broken bones, but the pieces weren’t moved far enough to be out of alignment during the break.” This basically means a non-displaced foot fracture is a broken bone in the foot where the bone fragments remain aligned and have not shifted out of their normal position.

Full recovery can take six to eight weeks. Therefore, as long as the Padres punch their ticket to the postseason, Xander could possibly be healed and able to return during the playoffs.

As for Jackson Merrill and Michael King, Kevin Acee reported on their statuses as well. Acee mentions,

“Jackson Merrill is in Arizona getting live ABs. Looks like return next week vs. Orioles if all goes well.

Michael King threw a simulated game against minor leaguers in Fort Wayne today. Four innings, 60 pitches. Orioles series also seems likely for his return.”

Jackson Merrill taking live batting practice today in Arizona and getting more live at-bats tomorrow is a great sign. And with King in simulation game phase, it looks like these two Padres are inching closer towards a return. That is very good news as San Diego pushes towards the playoffs. Will they take the division or end up as a wild card? We’ll know the story in just a few more weeks.
