Records can always be broken. They come, they go; yet their impact can say and imply oh so much. Therefore, what record is San Diego smashing right now? Well, the Padres Hit New All-Time Franchise Attendance Record showing that sports fever is still alive and well in ‘America’s Finest City.’
Is this type of attendance really that astounding? For some it might be. However, for anyone even slightly paying attention to San Diego sports; it’s just more of the same.
Despite false narratives, San Diego is very much a sports town. Natives here have always enjoyed hitting up baseball, basketball and NFL games. Even college sports and women led teams have garnered major audiences.
However, with the departure of the Clippers and Chargers; many would think that such exits would completely pull the plug out of the San Diego’s sports socket. Wrong. No exodus of sorts can slow or stop SD’s love of numerous sports. It’s a pastime. It’s a passion… and it is here to stay.
Padres Hit New All-Time Franchise Attendance Record- The Fans Did That!
To help put an exclamation mark on things, the Padres hit a new attendance record during the month of September; the final month of the regular season. All season long, Padres’ owner Peter Seidler got to enjoy seeing Petco Park experience sell out after sell out. And during the final homestead against the Colorado Rockies; the numbers really skyrocketed.
On September 18, of the 2023 season Petco Park recorded an attendance of 42, 062. The park can only safely hold 42, 445 tops. Nevertheless, when added all up, this means the Padres have welcomed 3,029,009 fans this year at Petco!
This is a wild stat, given that it beats how many fans attended when Petco first opened. Back in 2004 the record became 3,016,752. Fast forward 19 years and the fans are coming out by thousands more on a regular basis.
Such regularity is not just blind loyalty. The Padres going to the NLCS in 2022 plays into generating more interest and ticket sales. Plus, the franchise now having an owner willing to spend on players is also whipping the fandom into a frenzy. Lastly, more “stars” on the team roster helps put more individuals into seats.
Therefore, the Padres organization should be proud of the success with fans they are seeing. However, the real work will now begins. Keeping fan interest high with a “product” on the field worth paying for and watching. With the Padres massively underperforming this season, this issue may be more challenging than one might expect. Nevertheless, the fans are speaking loud and clear, “if you build it (and win); we will come.”
