Padres Hire Mike Shildt- Two Year Contract to Go For the Big Win
After a very long, and lengthy interview process, the Padres hire Mike Shildt. Shildt has been given a two-year contract to take over managing the San Diego Padres. Nevertheless, is he the right guy?
Well, Padres fans have been debating for close to a month about who are the right choices to succeed Bob Melvin as manager. Candidates that were publicly known included: Phil Nevin, Benji Gill and Ryan Flaherty. Shildt and Flaherty were already with the organization; so it’s been speculated one of them would get the job for about the last month or so. Nonetheless, the speculation turned out to be true. Mike is now the guy, and the skipper in charge.
However, he does process quite the baseball pedigree. Mike Schilt has been a senior advisor with the Padres for the last two seasons. And previously managed the St. Louis Cardinals for parts of four seasons.
What are his Cardinals tenure results? By the numbers, he’s a winner. With the Cards he made the playoffs three times and won Manager of the Year in 2019.
He also had a winning record with the Cardinals at 252-199. Moreover, during the 2021 season, the Cardinals won 17 games in a row under Schilt. Which is the longest winning streak in franchise history.
Nevertheless, so why didn’t the Cardinals keep him after that season? The answer “philosophical differences.” Some sort of issue that pit Shildt against the front office.

Is it a good hire? Nobody really knows
AJ Preller is a GM known for being very hands-on. Shield will be the fourth full-time manager AJ brother has hired. There is much speculation that AJ Preller is on the hot seat after the Padres missed the playoffs in 2023 and with the passing of owner, Peter Seidler, AJ Brother’s future is uncertain. This likely means he could not have just any manager that he wanted. But she is familiar with how brother works and knows the players having helped Fernando Tatís Junior in his transition to right field. He has a winning managerial record and for a veteran team that’s looking to win now it’s probably better to have a manager with some experience managing a team, then trying to hire a rookie manager that would have to learn the ropes and win at the same time.
Padres Hiring Mike Shildt- A Very Safe Bet
Shildt possesses a .559 career winning percentage. This makes him the sixth winningest manager in baseball since 1947 for managers who have managed at least 450 games. A higher percentage than even Bob Melvin, if I may add.
Therefore, all in all, I think Schilt is probably the safest choice for manager. After all the reports of Bob Melvin and AJ Preller, having not known each other before working together and having a lot of conflict; I would think the top priority, of hiring a new manager would be AJ Preller; and the incoming manager being on the same page. Being able to “stand each other” and get along together. Going in the same direction to win a title; and the man willing to flow with AJ to accomplish that; appears to be Mike Shildt.
