Padres GM AJ Preller Announces Joe Musgrove Will Undergo Tommy John Surgery

In a playoff run the last thing you want to lose is a starting pitcher. Yet, that is exactly the situation that San Diego finds itself in at present.  The hometown native is going to have to exit stage right. On Friday, Padres GM AJ Preller announces that Joe Musgrove will undergo Tommy John surgery.

During the Wild Card Series Musgrove had been spied experiencing discomfort on the mound. His catcher, Kyle Higashioka was the first to notice and immediately called for a timeout in order to go check on him. In time it became abundantly clear that Joe would not be able to finish the game against the Atlanta Braves. He was removed and immediately went under observation by team doctors.

Initial indications was discomfort in the elbow. And one day before the start of the NLDS manager Mike Shildt announced that Joe Musgrove would not be available or pitching in the series. AJ Preller then delivered the news no fan wishes to hear, Musgrove is out for the rest of the season and will require surgery.

Regarding the Joe Musgrove injury, Major League Baseball reports,

“RHP Joe Musgrove has UCL injury, will undergo Tommy John surgery. The announcement was made by Padres GM A.J. Preller.”

Joe Musgrove also spoke out to the media about this unfortunate development. He also reflects upon the moment he was removed from the game this week. Joe states,

“I’m frustrated, I don’t know what the future looks like for me right now. But I know I’m going to give it every chance I have, and I’ll do whatever I’ve got to do to get back in there at some point.

From the start it didn’t feel great. I was capable of making pitches and felt all right. But going out for that fourth inning, nothing felt right.

[Leaving the game]… That was probably best for me. I’m not the type to pull myself out of games. But [Higashioka] knew I didn’t feel great, and I think he noticed a change in the stuff.

I’m sure Darvish and Martín will be right in the mix. Next man up kind of mentality.”

For a good chunk of the 2024 season, Joe Musgrove had been plagued by injury issues. He got off to a very uncharacteristic start, needing to be removed from games early due to giving up too many runs. However, after taking time to rest and heal; Musgrove finished the season strong, helping the Padres punch their ticket to the postseason.

In the wild card he looked good as well up until he was removed in game two. The dominant Musgrove we all know seemed to be back in action. His execution had been impeccable.

Yet, here we are, with Joe now out of the picture and with a long recovery up ahead. What now? Fortunately, for San Diego Preller quietly (and not so quietly); gathered up various pitching options and pieces for the Padres to utilize. Many would agree that the Padres are stacked in the pitching department which should somewhat help lessen the blow of Musgrove’s departure.

Kyle Higashioka and San Diego seems to agree. Kyle states, “Hopefully, Joe’s OK. If not, then somebody’s going to have to step up. … Joe is irreplaceable. But this is the time of the year where the only thing that matters is winning. We’ve got to do what we can with the players that we have.”
