Padres Gary Sanchez -San Diego Gambles to ‘Catch’ Playoff Spot
On paper the Padres start the season looking like THE FORCE of Anakin Skywalker. However, 2023 is beginning to head towards panic mode. Why? Well, San Diego is enduring some pretty tough roster holes and are aiming to fill them as soon as possible. Currently, the Padres Gary Sanchez is the newest effort by the franchise to get back on track.
Is Sanchez the answer to all of the Padres’ issues? Hardly. However, it is a risk that could pay off.
Anyone who has watched baseball knows that back in the day Sanchez was raking. A strong bat whose defense however started to dip. This is a guy who at one point hit a ton of homeruns and was considered to be the league’s best offensive catcher.
Nevertheless, that is the past. This is the present, and the Padres need help now. Yet, if San Diego can even squeeze out a fraction of the production out of Gary and get him to be even a shade of what he used to be; then this pickup could pay precious dividends.

Nonetheless, the problem with this pick up is that someone has to go. That someone is unfortunately, Brett Sullivan. Sully may not have been the best when batting during his few appearances; however, you can’t deny he’s been good in other ways.
In several games, including against the stellar Yankees; Sullivan threw out and tagged out players. This is something most Catchers on the Padres are not doing. You would think that would count for something; but so far it isn’t.
Sports is a business and unfortunately, Sullivan is still getting the short end of the stick. The Padres announce that he is going back to Triple A, while Gary Sanchez acclimates and Nola stays up carrying out Catcher duties.
Furthermore, fan favorite catcher “Campy” is still out with injuries. So the Padres are a little up against the wall. Not only are they not batting as well as we know they can, they are being plagued with injuries.
However, if they can weather the storm at this crucial point in the season they can look forward to getting Manny, Suarez and Campusano back. Which will no doubt be a big help for the Southern California team. Moreover, as we all know it’s not how you start the season; it’s how you end it. So then, it will be quite interesting to see what additional changes or moves are made by the Padres to get themselves back in striking distance of a playoff run.
