Padres Begin Search for New 2024 Manager-Melvin Gone to Giants

Bob Melvin is now back home swimming in the Bay and San Diego is moving on to find a winning replacement. Therefore, as the Padres begin search for new 2024 manager; there’s good news and bad news. Let’s start with the good, shall we?

Padres’ GM, AJ Preller says that this position is currently a hot job listing. Tons of interest, meaning locating a qualified candidate should not be difficult. Preller confirms this by stating,

“I think we have some (internal) candidates that … we feel strongly about that are really well qualified; and we have some other candidates in the organization that we’re going to talk to and engage their interest level. I can just tell in the first 24 hours there’s a lot of interest in this job. We’ve had some very interesting names and some people that are very accomplished that have expressed interest in this job.

I think, really, it’s a testament to our team, our roster, the talent that’s here. The fact that we’ve gotten to the playoffs a couple times here in the last few years (and) our city. We’ve got amazing fans that support this team. So it’s an attractive job.”

Yay. So what’s the plan? How is this going to go for the Padres organization? Preller continues,

“I think we’ll sit down with some internal candidates the next few days, but we’re going to make sure we exhaust all the different possibilities to get the right choice. There’s no real timeframe. … It’s a big offseason for us. We’ve got a lot of decisions to make. This is the first one. We want to try to get it right.”

The problem is… this manager search is nothing new. For San Diego fans it is a broken record; a revolving door so to speak. Managers come in, managers go out.

Nevertheless, Preller acknowledges this and offers some hope. Things shall improve. This will be a rigorous process and search to find the right guy this time. Regarding this, AJ states,

“We’ve been through the process a few times here. Every time you go through any process you gain experience, what you’re looking for, different questions you’re asking, how you’re vetting different guys out. I think we’ll have some good knowledge and experience as we go to this one. But each situation is different.

There were some adjustments that Bob had to make coming from Oakland, there were adjustments that I had to make with a new manager. I think as we went through the process the last two years, like any relationship, there were things you liked, there were things that we felt we could have done better. We played deep into the postseason (in 2022), so I think people view that as a success.

We didn’t get it done this year. I think our focus is on let’s go get a manager, let’s go get better this offseason.”

Music to the ears of all San Diegans as well as Padres fans. Yes, go get it done AJ. And we’ll keep you all posted with any updates.
