He does NOT leak any information; therefore, every season you are in for a real surprise. In 2025, it is not any different; this time the Padres acquire closer Mason Miller and starter JP Sears from the A’s.
This move by AJ is not surprising since you can’t win a championship without pitching. There’s been issues at the closer position in San Diego; plus numerous injuries with starters, such as with Yu Darvish, Michael King and Joe Musgrove. However, the brown and gold have powered through these pitching setbacks and find themselves in the playoff mix. Adding more controllable pitching will only make the Padres stronger.
Nonetheless, Jeff Passan reported on details regarding this morning’s trade situation stating,
“BREAKING: The San Diego Padres are acquiring closer Mason Miller and starter J.P. Sears from the A’s, sources tell ESPN.
The A’s are receiving shortstop Leodalis De Vries, the No. 3 overall prospect in baseball, along with three pitchers from San Diego for Mason Miller and J.P. Sears.

Therefore, the A’s are receiving the Padres’ No. 1, No. 3, No. 13, and No. 17 ranked prospects.

Looking on paper the Padres gave up a lot; especially, SS Leodalis DeVries. Would’ve been fun to see this young man with the likes of Tatis Jr. and Jackson Merrill in the future. But don’t the masses say the same every season? The whole Preller has emptied the farm scenario?
Truth is, AJ is a scout at his very core. And with his eye for talent; he always grabs up more prospects. Prospects that other teams always seem to want. So then, yes, Preller lives on the edge and makes moves other General Managers would never even attempt. But AJ is great for baseball and makes every trade deadline more exciting. He’s in win-now mode and hopefully his moves will finally get the monkey off San Diego’s back.
