Only Two Super Bowls Have Gone Into Overtime in NFL History
Overtime in the Super Bowl is like getting hit by lightning 99 times; it just never (rarely) happens. In fact, you can count the number of times it’s occurred over the years on just one hand. Therefore, let’s briefly discuss this intriguing National Football League fact… only two Super Bowls have gone into overtime in NFL History spanning numerous decades.
Yep, just two. If you decided to tune into Super Bowl 58, of the matchup featuring the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers. Then congratulations! You just witnessed with your own eyes one of the two of these extremely rare Super Bowl occurrences.
The Chiefs and 9ers SB was a great, back and forth shootout; with San Francisco leading most of the game. However, the Chiefs were not about to be denied of glory and kept fighting back successfully. The fourth quarter ends with both teams being tied at 19-19.
It is a very low scoring game, but with tons of action. Yet, the Chiefs would pull off the big “W.” Hoisting another Lombardi in overtime, 22-25.

However, what about the very first Super Bowl to go into overtime? When did that happen? Well we bet you can guess it. Here’s a hint: 28-3.
Yes, it should be know surprise to anyone that the first overtime game in SB history involves the GOAT, Tom Brady. The San Diego Tribune reminisces about this epic “Patriotic” day; they state,
“Of the first 55 Super Bowls, only one went into overtime, the New England Patriots’ 34-28 comeback victory over the Atlanta Falcons in Super Bowl LI.
The Falcons famously held a 28-3 lead late in the third quarter before the Patriots, three-point favorites, scored three touchdowns and a field goal on their final four drives of regulation to tie the score 28-28.
New England won the overtime coin flip and easily moved down the field, covering 75 yards in eight plays, the last of which was a two-yard touchdown by running back James White, his third of the game. Under the NFL’s overtime rules (before the change), a touchdown on the opening drive automatically ends a game.”
What a moment in time. Heck, the same can be said of Super Bowl 58. No matter who you were rooting for, you got to admit it was an incredibly entertaining game.
Plus, wait a minute… both Patrick Mahomes and Tom Brady both played in and won overtime Super Bowl championships? Guess the comparisons are going to just keep coming about these two winning quarterbacks. However, in regards to the 2nd SB overtime battle… major congratulations to the Chiefs and we already can’t wait till next season!
