Oklahoma City Thunder Locking Down Star Player Shai Gilgeous-Alexander With Extension
After winning the 2025 NBA Championship the team has made moves to keep their roster intact. Just two days ago, on June 29, they signed forward/center Jaylin Williams to a multi-year contract extension. And now the Oklahoma City Thunder are locking down star player Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (SGA) with an extension. He has signed two contract extensions as a member of the Thunder. And this new extension is quite lucrative as noted by Shams Charania. He writes:
“BREAKING: NBA MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has agreed to a four-year, $285 million super maximum contract extension with the championship Oklahoma City Thunder through 2030-31, sources tell ESPN. This is now the richest annual salary for a player in league history.”
“Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has signed two contract extensions now as a member of the Thunder, cementing both sides’ partnership and trust since he arrived to OKC in 2019. He joined an exclusive club of players to win the MVP and Finals MVP in the same season.”
USA Today reporter Scooby Axson provided a breakdown of SGA’s earnings as detailed below:
“A three-time first-team All-NBA performer, Gilgeous-Alexander is scheduled to take home $38.3 million and $40.8 million in the final two years of his current contract, which he signed in 2021. He will make $63.5 million in the first year of the extension, $68.6 million in 2028-29, $73.7 million in 2029-30 and $78.7 million in the final year of the deal.”
SGA joins some elite company by being the MVP and Finals MVP in the same season. The only others to accomplish that feat are Michael Jordan (four times), LeBron James (twice), Larry Bird (twice), Tim Duncan, Shaquille O’Neal, Hakeem Olajuwon, Magic Johnson, Moses Malone, Kareem Adbul-Jabbar and Willis Reed.

Winning the NBA Championship capped off what was a very productive season for SGA. As detailed by Shams Charania:
His 3,172 points, including regular season and playoffs, were the most since Jordan during the 1992-93 same season. He scored 20 or more points in 72 straight games this season — the fourth-longest streak within a season in NBA history — and his +918 plus-minus was the best in an NBA season since the Warriors‘ Stephen Curry in 2016-17. And as he led the Thunder to their first NBA championship he averaged 30.3 points a game in the series.
With both SGA and Jaylin Williams locked down, the Thunder can focus on taking care of the rest of their young team. Or they have the flexibility to bring in other guys. But at this point it’s safe to say OKC is here to stay for the foreseeable future. Congratulations to SGA on his massive new deal, he’s earned it!
