OKC Thunder SGA Named Western Conference Finals MVP

OKC Thunder SGA Named Western Conference Finals MVP Via Unanimous Vote

They didn’t need a Game 7. In fact, they just needed five. The Thunder took down the Minnesota Timberwolves in dominant fashion and have punched their ticket to the 2025 NBA Finals. Winning their latest playoff series 4-1. While collectively the team played exceptionally well as a solid unit, one player still designated himself as a valuable asset of the roster; and for that he was awarded. On Wednesday evening, OKC Thunder’s SGA was named the Western Conference Finals MVP via unanimous vote.

Yes, after game 5, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was named Western Conference finals MVP via unanimous vote after he scored 31-plus points in each of Oklahoma City’s wins. Including a 34-point, 8-assist, 7-rebound effort in Wednesday’s clincher. SGA has led his Thunder to the NBA Finals for the first time since 2012.

Nevertheless, this exciting news comes on the heels of the OKC superstar winning the 2025 KIA MVP Award. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is the second Canadian player to win the MVP award. Steve Nash won back-to-back NBA MVPs in 2005 and 2006.

SGA finds himself in some good basketball company now that he possesses MVP accolades and is heading to a Finals appearance. The National Basketball Association PR Communications page explains,

“Shai Gilgeous-Alexander will be the first player to win the Kia NBA Most Valuable Player Award and play in the NBA Finals presented by YouTubeTV in the same season since Golden State’s Stephen Curry in 2015-16. The Finals begin with Game 1 in Oklahoma City on Thursday, June 5 at 8:30 p.m. ET on ABC.”

Nice. It never hurts to be mentioned in the same sentence as GSW legend, Steph Curry. SGA is certainly making a name for himself and is having a stellar year on paper and on the court. However, speaking of Golden State’s Stephen Curry, Shai has a chance and shot at making some more history soon; depending on how he does in the Finals. SGA has a chance to become the first MVP to win the NBA Finals since Steph Curry did so in 2014-15.

Therefore, we will have to see if SGA adds another MVP honor in the coming days. Nevertheless, for his current WCF MVP speech, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was very humble. Even in this moment he refused to make it about himself. He wanted his team to know it’s not about him, but THEM.

As confetti continued to fall, SGA stated, “I don’t have 124 points by myself. I love these guys to death.” Yes, there’s no “I” in team. And together they will see if they have what it takes to finally help OKC Thunder win a championship since relocating from Seattle to Oklahoma City in 2008.
