OKC And Chet Holmgren Agreed To Fully Guaranteed Contract Extension

OKC And Chet Holmgren Agreed To Fully Guaranteed Contract Extension

It’s been a great summer for the Oklahoma City Thunder and its players. They won the NBA Championship, SGA is on the cover of NBA 2K26, and now another key player has been signed. OKC and Chet Holmgren agreed to a fully guaranteed contract extension. And another tidbit is that SGA agreed on a record-setting 4-year, $285 million extension that would give him the highest single-season average salary in NBA history, per multiple reports. The team announced the deal on July 8.

Coming in with the details of Holmgren’s deal is Shams Charania, he posted:

“Breaking: Oklahoma City Thunder star and NBA champion Chet Holmgren has agreed to a fully guaranteed five-year maximum rookie contract extension that could reach $250 million, agent Bill Duffy of WME Basketball told ESPN.”

“After missing three months during the season, Holmgren returned in February and came back stronger to help lead OKC and its young core to the NBA title. The Thunder will now move toward locking in All-NBA superstar Jalen Williams, who has momentum in his rookie extension talks.”

So, OKC has been busy and will continue to be busy locking down their top-tier players. Signing Holmgren to an extension was important because he played an integral part on the team in the playoffs. As reported by Star Tribune, he had 18 points, eight rebounds and five blocks in Game 7 of the NBA Finals. Helping to lead the Oklahoma City Thunder to a 103-91 win over the Indiana Pacers and a championship on June 22.

Holmgren, 22, was the No. 2 overall pick in the 2022 NBA draft but missed his entire rookie season due to a foot injury. He showed off his immense potential a year later, finishing second in the Rookie of the Year voting after averaging 16.5 points, 7.9 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 2.3 blocks per game while shooting 37 percent from three. During this past season, he averaged 15.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 2.2 blocks per game while shooting 37.9 percent from beyond the arc.

SGA spoke to Bleacher Report about his teammate Holmgren stating:

“It’s super fun,” Gilgeous-Alexander told B/R in March about playing alongside Holmgren. “It’s where the NBA has gone today, it’s position-less basketball. Any position can do anything, pass, dribble, shoot. He’s such a versatile player, he brings so much to the game and makes it so much easier for myself and the rest of my teammates.”

Oklahoma City Thunder has now secured two of their three young and talented core players. And it looks like Jalen Williams will soon also get a new contract extension. And that spells trouble for the rest of the league. Congratulations to SGA and Chet Holmgren on their new deals!
