Offensive Lineman Jason Peters Announced His Retirement

Some called him a generational talent. Despite being an undrafted tight end out of Arkansas, he went on to become one of the greatest offensive lineman in modern NFL history. Yesterday, the legendary offensive lineman Jason Peters announced his retirement. His NFL career spanned 21 years, 11 of which was spent with the Philadelphia Eagles. However, it was the Buffalo Bills who signed him as an undrafted free agent after the 2004 NFL Draft and he spent five years with them. While with the Bills, he was selected as the starting left tackle in the Pro Bowl. Along with a Second-team All-Pro for the 2008 season.

But then came the blockbuster trade with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2009. In an effort to replace departing left tackle Tra Thomas the Eagles acquired Peters. Philadelphia gave up a first-round pick, a fourth-round pick, and a sixth-round pick. While also extending Peters, a rising star in Buffalo, with a lucrative contract. For a decade Peters held down the left tackle position. He was selected to the Pro Bowl seven times, second in franchise history behind Hall of Fame linebacker Chuck Bednarik . He was a four-time All-Pro selection in Philadelphia and a member of the NFL’s All-Decade Team for the 2010s.

Executive Vice President/General Manager Howie Roseman spoke about Peters from the NFL Combine. “Man, great, great player. That trade that we made, I was the personnel director at the time, the guy is just a freak of all freaks. They called him ‘The Franchise’ for a reason. You felt every Sunday going into a game that you had no worries no matter who the pass rusher was. Elite athlete. Elite teammate. World Champion. In my mind, no doubt first-ballot Hall of Famer. Just incredible career. One of the many players that I don’t think I’d be standing up here if it wasn’t for the success of guys like that. Just really thankful for Jason Peters.”

After spending a season with the Chicago Bears in 2021 and the Dallas Cowboys in 2022, it was on to Seattle. He spent the 2023 season with the Seahawks, appearing in eight games, starting in two of them. Last season he was on the practice squad before making his way to the injured list. But his true value to the team was his impact on the other players despite not being on the field.

Because of that impact and due to his retirement the Seahawks have hired Peters as their Veteran Mentor. Vice President of Player Affairs Maurice Kelly said Peters has a “wealth of experience.” The exact details of what his day-to-day role will look like are still being finalized, Kelly said the staff, including general manager/vice president of football operations John Schneider recognized that Peters could be an asset simply because of the way players gravitate to him and his years of knowledge.

So congratulations to Jason Peters on his retirement from a stellar career and his new job!
