Oakland Athletics Visit Utah for Temporary Home

Oakland Athletics Visit Utah for Temporary Home During 2025-2027 Seasons

The A’s need a new home… temporarily. The team is bound for Las Vegas; but in the meantime, the franchise does not have a suitable stadium to play in; and host various opponents. Therefore, the search is on. However, things are heating up in this regard; word is… the Oakland Athletics visit Utah for temporary home during 2025-2027 seasons.

Why can’t the A’s stay put in Oakland till their fateful move to the Strip? Well, in a word… disrepair. The ball clubs current dwelling was allowed to age, rot and basically fall apart.

Writer David Debolt wrote about conditions back in 2022 via The Oaklandside. Brace yourself … Debolt’s description is nothing pretty. He reveals,

Feces from feral cats, a moth infestation, mold, a nearby homeless encampment, broken seats, and plumbing and water leaks all made the checklist of problems Vice President of Stadium Operations David Rinetti sent to Coliseum Authority Executive Director Henry Gardner in a letter on May 12.

With attendance diving, the A’s sent a letter to the head of the Coliseum authority detailing problems at the ballpark.

A’s fans on social media have been quick to point out the deficiencies on and off the field, from the cobwebs, broken seats, and problems at concession stands to the doubling of ticket prices, elimination of perks like A’s Access, and trading away marquee players under billionaire owner John Fisher.

[We] also continue to experience plumbing back ups in the food and beverage stands, leaking pipes, and leaking sinks,’ the team’s letter said. ‘When these issues happen, we contact the facility engineers to see what can be done. Many times there is a dispute on who is actually responsible. When these issues happen, we usually have to shut down the food stand until fixed, causing customer service issues with our fans.”

Goodness. It’s no wonder, a new place is necessary. And for any A’s fan who had to experience that; we are so sorry. Not cool, and very bad for baseball.

Unfortunately, even after enduring such trauma, Oakland’s team is being snatched away to head to new sports capital, Las Vegas. Reuters reports, “The A’s will play their final season at the Oakland Coliseum in 2024 and said they will work with MLB to identify “interim” locations to compete before opening a new ballpark on the Las Vegas Strip in 2028.”

So then, what about one of these “interim locations?” The Las Vegas Review Journal which is Nevada’s largest newspaper confirms the Athletics’ interest in Salt Lake City. Las Vegas Review Journal reveals,

“The Oakland A’s need a place to play for the 2025-27 MLB seasons. A stadium under construction in a Utah suburb has their attention.

A new ballpark under construction in Salt Lake City has the Athletics’ interest as they search for a temporary home field before their Las Vegas relocation.”

Moreover, KSL Sports 97.5 FM who covers Utah sports news; backs up the Vegas newspaper scoop by stating,

“The Athletics are visiting the current home of the Salt Lake Bees as the MLB club searches for a temporary home ahead of its move to Las Vegas.”

Nevertheless, it is a statement from Steve Starks, CEO of the Larry H. Miller Company, regarding the Athletics visit to Utah Thursday; that really seals the deal about this matter. Utah is rolling out the red carpet for the A’s. No doubt wanting to make a good long term impression on Major League Baseball.

What did Steve Starks statement say? Here it is in its entirety, released through online/social media. Starks says,

The Larry H. Miller Company is in regular contact with the Athletics. We hosted team officials on Thursday, and demonstrated we can accommodate their ballpark needs.

Our organization and the state are excited and able to welcome the Athletics until their new stadium in Las Vegas is completed.

In addition to Smith’s Ballpark, we will have a new ballpark opening in 2025 in Downtown Daybreak, South Jordan, anchoring a sports and entertainment district that features first-class player and fan amenities. This new ballpark will support the A’s needs and has been the focus of their interest. It will include breathtaking views of the field and the Wasatch Mountains, is easily accessible from Mountain View Corridor and TRAX, and is in the fastest-growing part of Salt Lake County.

Our unique, two-stadium solution would ensure that baseball stays in the Salt Lake market as the Salt Lake Bees return to Smith’s Ballpark for additional seasons.

Therefore, Utah could be a viable option for the A’s. Sure beats animal droppings and backed up pipes any day. Yet, we digress.

Oakland Athletics Visit Utah for Temporary Home – Final Thoughts

So then, the Oakland Athletics Utah visit for a temporary home, seems to have gone well. Decisions will have to be quick. Besides dealing with a rundown stadium, neglected by ownership; the A’s lease is up as well. A note on the Athletics’ Wikipedia page mentions, “The Athletics applied to relocate to Las Vegas after their lease with the Coliseum expires at the end of the 2024 season.” So the clock is ticking.

Nevertheless, once the clouds clear and the move is officially over. The Athletics and their fans will get to experience a brand new, gorgeous stadium. CBS reveals that, “The team plans to play at a $1.5 billion facility on the Las Vegas strip in 2028.”
