Oakland A’s Moving to Vegas- “A Tale of Two Cities”-San Diego Fans Understand

All week long the sports headlines read, “Oakland A’s Moving to Vegas.” The pain of losing a team is not something most cities or fandoms will ever experience. However, for those of us who do, let me tell you, it’s the pits.

Teams are here one day, gone the next. You’re cheering one weekend, then suddenly the rug is pulled from beneath you. No more hot dogs, no more popcorn; bye bye franchise.

Nevertheless, Oakland A’s fans, San Diego Padres (and Chargers) fans empathize with your loss. We understand too well what is like to lose team, after team.

Seriously, just take a look at our “sports lineage.”In our history, the powers that be have not shined on us. We lost the NFL Chargers several years ago…. And they act like we never existed.

We may have peeled off the Bolts from our car windows; also burned jerseys, but we know the truth. At one time, for the Chargers, San Diego is their home. Happy times (that is, if you ignore the treacherous cheap owner; who would not build a new stadium or field a proper team).

Moreover, our recently deceased and beloved (also big spending) owner, Peter Seidler;  reportedly tried to stop the Oakland A’s move. Slowly convincing others to join him in voting no. Yet, unfortunately he passed away before anything could be done.

So then, here we both are. A tale of two cities that are bonafide sports towns; with teams constantly being ripped from their grasps. A shame. But I offer an invitation to all of you Oakland A’s fans.

There are those that may want you to become Giants fans. Well, we’re in the Giants division, they just took our manager; (so whether we want to or not); we can’t like them either. So we got that in common.

Additionally, Padres fans can also relate since for many years before the Seidler family bought the team. The Padres always traded their good young players… because ownership couldn’t afford keeping them.  Names like Dave Winfield, Roberto Alomar, Gary Sheffield, Fred McGriff, Jake Peavy, Steve Finley, Kevin Brown and Adrian Gonzalez easily come to mind. After their departure, we would have to watch them win in other cities… often times beating us in the process. Ouch.

Lastly, major league baseball expects you to just follow the the A’s to Las Vegas.  This is your chance to be free to decide for yourself. The Padres have ownership committed to winning, in a beautiful stadium; with exciting players that will be here a long time like Fernando, Tatís, Jr.

Therefore, when you’re ready, we welcome you with open arms. From one hardcore sports loving fan (and town) to another.
