Novak Djokovic Tied Rafael Nadal For Most ATP Masters 1000 Match Wins

What a performance. After a disappointing finish at Indian Wells, one of the greatest tennis players in the world has yet again come to the court and made history. On Friday, in Miami Novak Djokovic tied Rafael Nadal for most ATP Masters 1000 match wins.

A true feat of mammoth proportions. Especially, when you think of all the legends Djokovic had to surpass to even tie Nadal. Clearly, Novak has consistently put in work.

Nevertheless, at the Miami Open Novak defeated Australian tennis player, Rinky Hijikata. Beating him 6-0, 7-6; and thus giving himself win number 410. Furthermore, this good performance means that the 6 time Miami champ has now broken his 3-match losing streak. Achieving his first win since Australia as he reaches the 3rd round in Miami.

So just great news all around. But getting back to Djokovic tying for the men’s most Masters 1000 match wins. Here is a short list of talented players and individuals he has now surpassed or tied:

410 Wins— Novak Djokovic

410 Wins— Rafael Nadal

381 Wins— Roger Federer

230 Wins— Andy Murray

209 Wins— Andre Agassi

Nice! Great company to be among. Also, this wasn’t the only historical aspect of Novak’s big victory. As OptaAce explains, “Novak Djokovic has equalled Rafael Nadal (410) for the most ATP Masters 1000 match wins of any player, since the format’s introduction iin 1990; he also appeared in his 501st ATP-1000 match, the most of any player. Monumental.”

Well, it looks like Djokovic appeared more like the Djokovic we are all familiar with watching. After his match against Hijikata, Novak discussed how he personally felt about his movement on the court. He states,

“I’ve had plenty of time since I lost in Indian Wells. It’s been two weeks so I had plenty of time to work on my game. I think we’ve done a really good job. Obviously it’s just the first match but the way I felt on court and the way I played is really encouraging.

I’m obviously excited to compete to keep on playing at the highest level when I play this way. Obviously It’s always a pleasure when you come back to an amazing city like Miami after six years of absence and I’ve had this many people in the first match, so I’m really, really grateful for their support.”

Excellent. It is great to see Novak continue to tack onto his legacy. And add another amazing achievement to his name. Now we eagerly await to see how the rest of the Miami Open goes for him.
