No Contract No Practice For QB Jordan Love

The Green Bay Packers’ training camp started today with a 90-minute, non-padded workout at Ray Nitschke Field. But with no contract there was no practice for QB Jordan Love. He will not be practicing until a contract is completed. The team reported that Love was at practice and will be participating in all team meetings and other team activities. But he will avoid any potential injuries by not practicing until his contract is done.

As reported by the team, “We’re working really hard to get that done,” General Manager Brian Gutekunst said prior to practice. “I think it’s really important for us. The thing that I have confidence in is we both want the same thing. We want Jordan here for a long time.” How long it will take to get the contract done is not known at this time. Gutekunst said they are close but there is no timetable. He had earlier expressed that they hoped to get something done before training camp. But clearly that didn’t happen and no reason was given for why it wasn’t done.

Love did participate in the entire voluntary offseason program, including OTAs, along with the mandatory minicamp while negotiations were ongoing. But he can’t risk practicing in training camp without an extension getting done. That just makes good business sense, as players have to protect themselves both physically and financially. “We certainly understand where he’s coming from,” Gutekunst said. “We’d like him to be out there.” Well if you want him out there you’re going to have work faster to get a deal done.
In the second half of last season, Love went on a tear dazzling everyone with his arm strength and fadeaway throws. He ended the 2023 season with 4,159 yards and 32 touchdowns.

Rich Eisen estimated his annual salary might be between 55 and 60 million with the new contract. If that’s correct then he could end up being the highest paid QB in the league. And some think he will be worth every penny. But getting out on the field and getting those practice reps is important. I hope for Love’s sake that they can come to an agreement sooner rather than later.
As for the Packers overall, the GM, head coach and players all talked about the positive vibes present. “I think they’re energized, I think guys are ready to go, they’re ready to get back at it, but ultimately, we’ve got to go out there and do the work and put the work in,” Head Coach Matt LaFleur said.
Most teams have started their training camps so we’ll keep you posted with all the action.
