NHL and NHLPA Preliminary Discussions On New NHL Calendar

It is time for change. At least that’s what the powers that be behind hockey are looking to do. What type of changes are being considered? Well, the NHL and NHLPA are having preliminary discussions on a new NHL calendar.

While most NHL enthusiasts currently have their attention on free agency. There is still plenty of business behind the scenes at hand. Once a season ends it is time to consider aspects of the game that will make the experience better for teams and their fans.

Some may think the way of the future is keeping the same number of games per season; or even decreasing the amount. However, the NHL and NHLPA are so far, kind of leaning in the opposite direction. Believing that the answer to making the hockey season even better is to increase how many games are played each year.

Pierre LeBrun, a NHL insider for The Athletic provides a very nice synopsis for some of the proposed changes. LeBrun reveals,

“Some non free-agent news:
The NHL and NHLPA have had very preliminary discussions on what a new NHL calendar could look like. Wouldn’t take effect until next CBA 2 years from now.
What’s being discussed:
_ Move start of reg season up to very early Oct;
_ Award Cup earlier in June;
_ Cut pre-season to 4 games per team;
_ 84-game regular season;
Basically moving things up 2 weeks or so.
It’s not awarding the Cup by May 31 but it sure beats what it looks like now!
Again, these are preliminary discussions. Let’s see where it goes.”

Nice summary. So then, it looks as though the plan is to chop down preseason games and add them to the regular season. Adding more games in the regular season does help to balance out the schedule. Plus, could lead to more revenue for teams which in turn can be shared with their players. Not a bad idea at all.

However, as mentioned these talks are just preliminary. And more discussion will have to be had. Yet, it will definitely be interesting to see what is eventually decided upon and implemented.
