NFLPA Executive Director Lloyd Howell Resigned From Post Amid Controversies

There had been rumors flying around that he might step down and that he should step down. But then the NFL Players’ Association put out a statement in support of their Director. So it was thought that he would be staying on the job. But last night a statement was released in which NFLPA Executive Director Lloyd Howell resigned from his post amid controversies. Below is his resignation statement:

“Two years ago, I accepted the role of Executive Director of the NFLPA because I believe deeply in the mission of this union and the power of collective action to drive positive change for the players of America’s most popular sport,” Howell said in a statement issued Thursday night by the NFLPA. “Our members deserve a union that will fight relentlessly for their health, safety, financial futures, and long-term well-being. My priority has been to lead that fight by serving this union with focus and dedication.

“It’s clear that my leadership has become a distraction to the important work the NFLPA advances every day. For this reason, I have informed the NFLPA Executive Committee that I am stepping down as Executive Director of the NFLPA and Chairman of the Board of NFL Players effective immediately. I hope this will allow the NFLPA to maintain its focus on its player members ahead of the upcoming season.

“I am proud of what we have been able to accomplish at the NFLPA over the past two years. I will be rooting for the players from the sidelines as loud as ever, and I know the NFLPA will continue to ensure that players remain firmly at the center of football’s future.”

Howell had been accused of one controversy after another in recent weeks.

NFLPA Executive Director Lloyd Howell Resigned From Post Amid Controversies

Some of the controversies included:

  • The hidden collusion ruling against giving players guaranteed dollars.
  • One Team Partners, a licensing group started jointly by the NFLPA and Major League Baseball Players’, became the focus of an FBI investigation for misuse of funds.
  • A conflict of interest with his part-time work for The Carlyle Group, one of the private-equity firms approved by the league to invest in NFL franchises.
  • Howell was elected to the position following a process that was shrouded in secrecy. None of the candidates were made public.
  • Some players were unaware that Howell was sued in 2011 for sexual discrimination and retaliation while he was a senior executive at Booz Allen Hamilton.

Senior ESPN writers Don Van Natta Jr. and Kalyn Kahler also exposed another issue related to Howell. They write:

“… an outside investigator hired by the union received documents this week showing Howell charged the union for two visits to strip clubs, including a $738.82 car service that took him from the airport to one of the clubs. Later, a union finance worker noticed the car service’s exorbitant cost. The employee searched online for the Miami Gardens address, discovering it was Tootsie’s Cabaret. The 76,000-square-foot venue bills itself as the world’s largest strip club — “full nude No. 1 rated.”

This was discovered hours before Howell submitted his resignation last night.

NFLPA Will Need To Hire A New Executive Director

With the secrecy and scandals piling up, Howell made the decision to resign. However, it is unknown if he made the decision of his own volition or if he was coerced to do so. At any rate the players deserve to have quality representation that has their best interests at heart. We hope that will be taken into consideration with the next person hired for the job.

However, we’ll have to see what happens next, but Pro Football Talk summed it up nicely:

“It remains to be seen who’ll have the interim gig and, more importantly, who will be hired to replace Howell. Hopefully, the process this time around will entail more (or any) transparency.”
