NFL World Mourns the Loss of Legend Dick Butkus
It’s a sad day for fans everywhere. The NFL world mourns the loss of legend Dick Butkus. He passed away peacefully in his sleep in his Malibu, California home. He lived to the ripe old age of 80. Butkus was one of the long-time faces of the NFL. He epitomized what it meant to play defense. As Ray Lewis said, “Butkus created why you don’t come in the middle of the field.” If anyone did they risked getting flattened like a pancake. And Butkus made a lot of pancakes.
Chicago was Butkus’s stomping grounds. He was born there, he played high school and college football there. And eventually became a Chicago Bear drafted as the third choice in the 1965 NFL draft. It’s too bad that another legend, George Halas, retired from coaching in 1967. Although Butkus was a fierce competitor the team struggled after Halas left. They never finished above .500 or made the playoffs during his career. Maybe things would have been different had Halas still been there. At any rate, his aggressive play inspired future Bears stars like Mike Singletary and Brian Urlacher.
A knee injury forced Butkus to retire in 1973. Later he was inducted to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1979. He was also selected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1983. However, he went on to enjoy an acting and announcing career. His Miller Lite commercials of the 1970’s were hilarious. He worked on the CBS pregame show NFL Today offering excellent insight and commentary. Success followed him both on and off the field.
NFL World Mourns the Loss of Legend Dick Butkus
Losing Butkus is losing a part of the old school NFL. Back in the day, lighting up guys coming across the middle of the field was par for the course. His style of play is no longer welcome in the league. I get that player safety is important but football is a contact sport. If you take the big hits out of the game it changes the feel and the flow. But this is where we’re at now and have to accept the way things are. However, I will mourn the loss of Butkus and always remember how he played the game.
