NFL+ To Broadcast the NFL HBCU Combine 2024
February is Black History Month and today is President’s day. So it seems like a good time for NFL+ to broadcast the NFL HBCU Combine for 2024. If you don’t know, HBCU stands for historically black colleges and universities. The schools were founded due to black Americans not being permitted to attend predominantly white institutions.
So the purpose of the combine is to let the top NFL draft prospects showcase their talents. Scouts from the various teams get a chance to evaluate the athletes and determine if they might be a fit for their organizations. It works pretty much the same way as the standard NFL Scouting Combine. That combine will be held starting Monday February 26 – Monday March 4, 2024.
The HBCU’s are a tradition that has continued to produce top athletic talent. There have been plenty of NFL athletes who attended an HBCU. For instance, Jerry Rice, who may be the best wide receiver of all time, attended Mississippi Valley State University. He went on to became a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Another famous HBCU alum is Walter Payton who attended Jackson State University. One of the greatest running backs the NFL has ever seen. He left such an indelible mark on the league that the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award was created in his honor. The most recent recipient of the award is Cameron Heyward of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
One other HBCU alum is Art Shell, graduate of University of Maryland, Eastern Shore (formerly Maryland State College). He was an effective offensive lineman and played in 24 playoff games, Super Bowl XI and XV, and named to 8 Pro Bowls. He went on to become the first Black head coach of the Oakland Raiders in 1990. And he is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Just to name a few. No doubt this years HBCU Combine will unearth some more gems for the NFL. Best wishes to the young men competing today.
