NFL Planning Another Triple-Header On Christmas Day

NFL Planning Another Triple-Header On Christmas Day

Last year the NFL played in two football games while people gathered together on one of the biggest holidays of the year. And clearly it went well because they are offering another football bonanza for the 2025 season. The NFL is planning another triple header on Christmas Day. According to ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter: “An NFL Christmas triple-header: NFL will play two games on Netflix that day before the Christmas nightcap on Amazon.”

Last year Christmas fell on a Wednesday and the two games that were aired on Netflix put up huge ratings. Both games attracted over 24 million viewers which is unprecedented for games that were only available on the streaming service. Over the last three years the NFL has scheduled eight games on Christmas. Three in 2022, three in 2023 and two in 2024 and they also garnered big viewership numbers.

But Christmas Day games are not new to the NFL as CBS Sports reports:

“The NFL has been playing regular-season games on Christmas since 1989, and in the 35 years since then, the league has been looking to utilize the holiday whenever possible. In 2004, the NFL played its first Christmas doubleheader ever, and now, 21 years later, we’re getting our first Thursday Christmas game ever.”

Usually Thanksgiving is the holiday that NFL fans associate with football. The Dallas Cowboys and Detroit Lions are regular contributors to those games. In 2006, the NFL began scheduling three games on that day as opposed to just two. It’s safe to say they have that holiday on lockdown. But now they are looking to make inroads into the Christmas market.

However, not everyone is happy with the NFL and their three-year deal with Netflix. Last year, NBA superstar Lebron James had an issue with the NFL Christmas games. Christmas was almost the exclusive territory of the NBA but the NFL appears to be determined to change that going forward. Even James had to admit defeat when he said:

“I saw the f—ing numbers after the fact. You guys kicked our a–, alright. Okay. From a viewership standpoint y’all kicked our a–… You know, when you go out there, you got your little brother and he might get beat up one time. You’re like, ‘Hey, we didn’t lose that fight. We here.’ That’s how I felt. I had to stand up for the NBA.”

Lebron may not be happy with the NFL but I don’t think NFL fans are complaining too much. And since a lot of people already have Netflix, fans aren’t likely to miss out on the games. But for now, the teams playing in the Christmas games will be revealed in May when the NFL schedule is released.
