NFL Owners Approve Resolution for Players to Participate in Flag Football in 2028 Summer Olympics
Before the 2024 Paris Olympics came to their completion; we knew a few things. That the next summer games would be in Los Angeles, there would be several new events and one would be flag football. Well, on Tuesday the National Football League made another exhilarating announcement. NFL owners have now officially approved a resolution to allow their players to participate in flag football in the 2028 Summer Olympics.
So then, now football fans can not only look forward to seeing their favorite sport played in the Olympics. But also their favorite players. A win-win situation for the league and their spectators.
It is a positive for the NFL, as they continue to work to develop and deepen their global imprint. And it works just as beautifully for players because they get the opportunity to not only win a Super Bowl; but a gold medal for their country.
IFAF President Pierre Trochet released this statement about NFL clubs approving the participation of NFL players in the Olympics. Trochet states,
“I warmly welcome the outcome of this vote, which promises to add another dimension to what is already shaping up to be a game-changing debut for flag football at the Olympic Games.
The National Football League is home to the biggest stars in American football, who come from more and more countries, and now have the opportunity to shine on the greatest stage in world sport, showcasing everything that makes flag football a genuine worldwide phenomenon. IFAF’s 75 national federations join me in thanking our NFL partners for this further demonstration of their commitment to flag football in the Olympic movement. We will work together to ensure our sport contributes a defining element of LA28’s success.”

NFL Flag Ambassador Justin Jefferson shared his enthusiasm and excitement over players now being able to compete in the the Olympics. And he spoke on his eagerness to join the 2028 Olympics in LA. Jefferson told the press,
“To be honest, I’m at a loss for words… Even though it is three years down the line. And they are still planning who will all be on the team. To think about the chance of playing in the Olympics and getting a gold medal, it’s a dream.
Just [going] back to being a kid and watching the track and field meets. Watching basketball [players] win the gold medal. That’s something that as a kid I always wanted to be a part of; but football wasn’t [global].
So now that we are expanding the game and we are going more globally. It’s pretty cool. Just seeing all the different countries involved… there’s just so many different athletes all around this league that we have that come from different areas of this world. The talent is out there. It’s just this game needs to be expanded and to be played all around the world.
I’m just honored to be an ambassador [for flag football]. To see it expand and be what it is today. I’m honored to [help it grow] more. It is my job.”
Commissioner Roger Goodell agrees with Jefferson’s sentiments. Goodell adds, “It’s an incredible honor for any athlete to represent their country in the Olympics, which is the pinnacle of global sport. I know first-hand that the inclusion of flag football in the Olympics has sparked a tremendous amount of excitement among NFL players interested in the chance to compete for their country on the world stage. We are thrilled that they will now have that chance.” The 2028 Summer Olympics will begin on July 14.
