NFL News – Frank Reich Out As Head Coach of Carolina Panthers
After a 1-10 start for the Carolina Panthers, the organization has decided to make a change. In NFL news, Frank Reich is out as Head Coach of the Carolina Panthers. He didn’t last the whole season. Owner of the Panthers, David Tepper released the following statement:
“I met with Coach Reich this morning and informed him that he will not continue as head coach of the Carolina Panthers. I want to thank Frank for his dedication and service, and we wish him well. Effective immediately, Special Teams Coordinator Chris Tabor will serve as our interim head coach. Senior Assistant Jim Caldwell will be a special advisor to Offensive Coordinator Thomas Brown, who will take over play calling duties.”
The organization is concerned about the lack of development for number one pick, quarterback Bryce Young. Apparently they believe Young is their quarterback but is not making enough progress. According to insider Ian Rapoport, Jim Caldwell will step in to assist with the offense and try to get it right. Given that the Panthers gave up their 2024 first round pick to get Bryce Young it is imperative that they get a return on their investment.
Frank Reich, a former NFL quarterback himself, turned out to not be the guy that Young needs to help develop him. Despite the fact that he was backup to Jim Kelly on the Buffalo Bills for years. Or that former Colts executive Bill Polian called Reich, “the greatest backup quarterback in NFL history.”
But he often filled in when Kelly was hurt. Reich is one of a few quarterbacks who is undefeated as a starter in post-season play with more than one start. Ironically, he signed with the new extension team the Carolina Panthers in March 1995 in their first year. He has the honor of throwing the first touchdown pass in the franchise’s history.

However, his coaching career has been a mixed bag of results. In 2011, he was dismissed along with the entire coaching staff of the Indianapolis Colts after a 2-14 season. However, he was the offensive coordinator of the Philadelphia Eagles when they won Super Bowl LII for the 2017 season.
Reich will turn 62 on December 4 this year. He may be able to find an offensive coaching position with another team. But becoming a head coach again seems doubtful.
