NFL Honors Awards 2026; Matthew Stafford Wins MVP In Extremely Close Votes
Every year NFL players are recognized in certain categories and winning the MVP is one of the most prestigious awards for a football player. This year it was a tight battle between Drake Maye, New England Patriots quarterback and Matthew Stafford, Los Angeles Rams quarterback. So, in the NFL Honors Awards 2026; Matthew Stafford wins the MVP in extremely close votes. The Honors were held in San Francisco this year and hosted by actor John Hamm. They wrapped up the 2025 season prior to Super Bowl LX on Sunday February 8, 2026.
But before we get to the MVP drama we’ll take a look at the other award winners:
- Coach of the Year: Mike Vrabel, New England Patriots
- Offensive Player of the Year: Jaxon Smith-Njigba, WR, Seattle Seahawks
- Defensive Player of the Year: Myles Garrett, DE, Cleveland Browns
- Comeback Player of the Year: Christian McCaffey, RB, San Francisco 49ers
- Offensive Rookie of the Year: Tetairoa McMillan, WR, Carolina Panthers
- Defensive Rookie of the Year: Carson Schwesinger, LB, Cleveland Browns
- Assistant Coach of the Year: Josh McDaniels, offensive coordinator, New England Patriots
- Walter Payton Man of the Year: Bobby Wagner, LB, Washington Commanders
- Protector of the Year: Joe Thuney, G, Chicago Bears
Mike Vrabel has only been on the job 13 months and here he is, the Coach of the Year. He’ll have the chance to show off his coaching skills on Sunday in Super Bowl LX. Jaxon Smith-Njigba had an electrifying year, making ridiculous catches and leaving jaws dropping making him the Offensive Player of the Year. And now he’s also in the Super Bowl waiting to give the New England Patriots defenders fits.
Myles Garrett set the record for most sacks in a season with 23 surpassing Michael Strahan and T.J. Watt at 22.5 taking home Defensive Player of the Year. And his fellow teammate Carson Schwesinger was awarded Defensive Rookie of the Yeat.

Back to the MVP contest, it came down to the wire. Matthew Stafford beat out Drake Maye by one first-place vote. Stafford got 24 of them while Maye received 23 and Josh Allen had the 2 first-place votes. The last vote went to Justin Herbert, but he didn’t place in the top 5. Christian McCaffrey and Trevor Lawrence were in the top five but neither received first place votes.
While giving his MVP acceptance speech Stafford confirmed that he will return to the game for an 18th season. He had to endure contract issues and a nagging back problem, but it was worth it in the end as he won the MVP. Nevertheless, every player is always happy to be recognized for his hard work.
