NFL Has Committed To Multiple Regular Season Games Held In Rio De Janeiro Brazil
In their ever determined objective to increase their international profile the NFL has made an international commitment. Today they announced their partnership with the city and state of Rio De Janeiro. Meaning the NFL has committed to multiple regular season games to be held in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. The league has a multiyear commitment to play a minimum of three regular season games over five years in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil beginning in 2026.
Boasting 36 million fans throughout the country, the second highest international fan, base that was an opportunity the NFL could not resist. Therefore commissioner Roger Goodell was moved to make the following comment:
“Building on the success of the games in São Paulo, we could not be more excited to play in one of the world’s most iconic cities — Rio de Janeiro,” said NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. “We look forward to working closely with our city and state partners in Rio along with the historic Maracanã Stadium to deepen our ties to the tens of millions of fans in Brazil and across South America.”
However the Brazilians are equally eager for the partnership. The mayor expressed his excitement about seeing an American football game played at the Maracanã Stadium. Bringing football and football together in the same place.
“The National Football League’s multiyear partnership with Rio, a vibrant city where people want to be, is a perfect match,” said Mayor of Rio de Janeiro Eduardo Paes. “It will be a historic event, as NFL games will be included on our city’s official calendar. I’m looking forward to seeing an American football game at Maracanã, the most iconic temple of world football.”
This year we got to see the Los Angeles Chargers take on the Kansas City Chiefs in São Paulo at Corinthians Arena. Last year is was the Eagles and the Green Bay Packers in the same venue. With two Brazilian games successfully completed the NFL is moving the games to Rio De Janeiro.

For the league and its 32 teams international growth is a top priority. So the NFL Global Markets Program was established. Through this program the Detroit Lions, Miami Dolphins, New England Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles hold marketing rights in Brazil. Brazil even has an official NFL office based in São Paulo. They support a range of media and brand partnerships that continue to build the league’s presence and fanbase across the region.
But Brazil is just one of five countries hosting NFL games this season. The others are Ireland, U.K., Germany and Spain. And in 2026, Melbourne, Australia will join the international party staging a game for the first time at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). It will be the inaugural regular-season game for the continent.
So American domestic fans will need to get used to sharing their favorite pastime with the rest of the world.
