NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell Would Like to See 16 International Games Per Season

The league seems to have more stops than an U2 or Beyoncé world tour these days. And it looks like the trend will only continue as the National Football League pushes forward with its aim to have an even larger global imprint. During his Super Bowl press conference, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell says he would like to see 16 international games per season.

If that sounds like a lot to you, it is because it is a lot of matchups. That’s literally more than double than this past season. Which included a game in Ireland for the first time and continued the tradition of international games being played in South America as well as Europe.

Nevertheless, if you have been keeping count; what Goodell is alluding to is record breaking business. For instance, during the 2025 season the NFL held a record seven international games. With matchups being played across five locations: São Paulo (Brazil), Dublin (Ireland); London (UK- three games), Berlin (Germany) and Madrid (Spain).

Nonetheless, the NFL will play its first regular-season game ever in France next season with the New Orleans Saints set to travel to Paris later this year. And the league will also head back to Mexico City for the first time since 2022. So then, the league will once more take flight to new global heights in order to attract fans from international markets.

Furthermore, Roger Goodell is not allowing any grass to grow under his feet in this regard. He wants expansion. He wants the league to become a bigger part of sports in other countries. Goodell told the media,

“It’s something we want to talk about with the union leadership.

It’s the ambition we have to be a global sport. But it’s also the demand we’re having. We’re hearing from cities that want to host these games and really want to get more American football. That’s an important mark to shoot for and I think we’re on our way.”

The NFL has already announced its first game in Australia next season with the Los Angeles Rams set to host that game, as well as games in Rio de Janeiro, Munich, and three in London. The league will have nine international games next season and Goodell said it will eventually have 16 international games a year so each team plays one. The additions of Australia and France will mean NFL games will have been played in nine countries outside of the United States after next season.
