NFL.Com Reminded Us of The Broncos Vs. Patriots 2013

I’m a sucker for nostalgia especially when it comes to watching classic NFL games. Today we can take a trip down memory lane of one the greatest games ever. Nfl.com reminded us of the shootout between the Broncos vs. Patriots in 2013. It was one of the many battles between two of the best quarterbacks to ever play the game. Peyton Manning vs. Tom Brady was must-see TV and their games were treated with almost the same reverence as the Super Bowl. Or as Al Michaels put it: “I feel like I’m going to the symphony and I’m watching two great conductors with a baton.”

There were several story lines involved with that game. One was the return of Wes Welker to Gillette Stadium. He and the Patriots weren’t able to get a deal done after the 2012 season. Consequently he signed a two-year, $12 million contract with the Broncos. Brady was 9-4 against Manning, Manning was 2-7 at Gillette at the time. And this game was to be their 14th matchup. And the weather was also a factor with a temperature of 21 degrees and a windchill of six. Winds were blowing at 22 miles per hour. Before the game even started there was plenty of drama.

It was a rough start for the Patriots, or as Cris Collinsworth said, “disastrous.” The ball was fumbled by Stevan Ridley and Von Miller took it back for a touchdown. Brady was strip-sacked and the Broncos turned it into a touchdown. In 6:06 the Broncos were up by 14. By the time the game was at halftime the Patriots were down 24-0.  But they turned it around in the second half and put up 31 unanswered points taking a 24-31 lead.

But the Broncos weren’t done. All game long Aqib Talib had shut down Demaryius Thomas. But then Thomas dominated Talib and scored the touchdown sending the game into overtime. Head coach Bill Belichick gave the Broncos the ball deciding to take the wind instead. He felt the wind would be an advantage to help keep them out of the endzone. And that’s what happened, they prevented the Broncos from scoring. But the Patriots didn’t score either. The game was down to 3:09 on the clock when the Patriots punted the ball. Wes Welker waived it off but the ball was inadvertently touched by Tony Carter and the Patriots recovered it.

The Patriots kicked the field goal to win the game 31-34. There were so many things happening in this game both good and bad. But that’s what makes it a great game and a classic.
