NFC West Rivals Seattle Seahawks And Arizona Cardinals Struggled On Thursday Night Football
The heat today in Arizona was in the triple digits but the contest on the football field was mostly lukewarm. The game winner would break the three way tie in the division between these two teams and the Los Angeles Rams, all sitting at 2-1. So it didn’t make sense that the NFC West Rivals Seattle Seahawks and Arizona Cardinals struggled on Thursday Night Football. The Cardinals offense seemed confused. But that may have been due to Seattle’s dominant defense.
The first half of the game was filled with errors and lack of big plays. Marvin Harrison Jr. in particular had a rough start to the game. Either dropping passes or running the wrong route. He and quarterback Kyler Murray couldn’t get on the same page. One really egregious play for Harrison was when he juggled a catch right into the hands of defender Ernest Jones causing an interception. That abruptly ended what had been a promising drive for the Cardinals.
However, Seahawks leading receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba didn’t have any catches until he turned it on in the fourth quarter. He ended the night with four receptions for 79 yards. Kenneth Walker did some heavy lifting with his rushing attack. He rushed for 81 yards on 19 attempts for the game. Quarterback Sam Darnold did his part making some nice throws including a 32-yard pass to Elijah Arroyo and followed it up with his own 24 yard scamper. All of which culminated in a touchdown prior to halftime. The Cardinals had the 14-3 lead.
The score should have been higher as the Seahawks left some points on the field. Especially since the Cardinals’ offense was struggling to find their rhythm. But things finally started looking better in the second half.

Both teams scored a field goal in the third quarter. Seattle got their field goal first and during the drive Sam Darnold was sacked twice. Jason Myers kicked the 44-yard field goal. On the way to getting their third quarter field goal, Kyler Murray was also sacked twice. But he did connect with Harrison on a 16-yard pass. And kicker Chad Ryland sealed the drive with a 57-yard field goal.
The fourth quarter saw the most action. Murray and Harrison finally hooked up on a 16-yard touchdown pass. The catch had a completion probability of 26.0%, the ninth-most improbable touchdown of the season per Next Gen Stats. That pulled the Cardinals within 7 points with the score being 20-13. Seattle then missed a field goal and Arizona scored another touchdown. But on the kickoff the ball was short of the landing zone. So the ball was placed on the 40. In 28 seconds the Seahawks went 26 yards in 7 plays and kicked the 52-yard winning field goal.
Seattle won 23-20 and now are in second place in the NFC West behind the undefeated 49ers.
