NFC West Battle Was A Must Win For Both Teams

WAR OF THE KICKERS! It was a divisional game of great importance as we headed into Week 15 of the season. The Rams were trying to catch the division leading Seahawks. While the 49ers needed a win to keep their playoff hopes alive. Therefore the Thursday Night Football NFC West battle was a must win for both teams. The 49ers got some help with the return of Nick Bosa and Dre Greenlaw on defense. Would such help prove to be enough?

Well, San Francisco got the ball first and went three and out and the Rams did the same on their opening drive. George Kittle had a nice 33-yard reception on the 49ers second drive but they couldn’t run the ball. So they settled for a 53-yard field goal.

Both teams then went three and out again. Matthew Stafford was nearly intercepted twice while the 49ers couldn’t establish the run game. They used Deebo Samuel to run the ball along with Isaac Guerendo but it wasn’t working.

However, the 49ers defense did do a good job of disrupting the timing of the Rams offense which kept them from getting first downs. There were seven punts in the first quarter and the Rams didn’t get a first down. Even the weather played a part in the game with rain pouring down. After the 49ers punted in the second quarter the Rams finally picked up their first first down. Stafford had to run to pick up another one but they ended up punting.

The Rams had success getting into the 49ers backfield. But the rain caused both teams to slip, slide and drop balls so there were more punts. With 1:10 left in the second quarter the Rams kicked a 48-yard field goal. Jordan Elliott got a hand on the ball but it still went right through the goalposts. After much back and forth, the score was 3 – 3 at halftime.

The second half saw the scoreboard increase a tad thanks to nature ‘taking a hike.’ And also thanks to the kickers of both teams getting quite the workout. The Rams opened the third quarter with a three and out as the 49ers coverage was excellent. However, good news, the rain had stopped.

Deebo Samuel had a big drop on 3rd & 10 during the 49ers opening drive. The 49ers kicked a 47-yard field goal to take the lead 3-6. With just under two minutes in the third the Rams got into the red zone for the first time. But an ineligible downfield pass and an offensive holding penalty stalled the drive. They kicked a 23-yard field goal to tie the game in the fourth quarter.

The Rams kicked two more field goals. Although the 49ers had great field position due to a horse-collar penalty the time ran out. The Rams held on for the 12-6 victory. This was the first touchdown-less game of the 2024 NFL season.
