New York Yankees Part Ways With DJ LeMahieu
It’s the part of baseball that is tough for fans. Seeing guys join the team, make an impact, but eventually in time leave it. On Wednesday, the New York Yankees Parted Ways With DJ LeMahieu after signing a six-year deal for $90 million in 2021 following consecutive top-5 finishes for AL MVP.
ESPN’s Jeff Passan confirmed DJ’s departure stating, “Infielder DJ LeMahieu has been designated for assignment by the New York Yankees. He is owed nearly $22 million on the remainder of his six-year contract that ran through 2026.”
Nonetheless, when it comes LeMahieu you have to put some respect on his name; especially 2019-2021. DJ finished in the top 4 in MVP voting in first two Yankee seasons and won a batting title in 2020. However, unfortunately injuries and ineffective play derailed him.
DJ was willing to be a team player and move around. But nothing could seem to pan out. According to Yankees reporter Bryan Hoch, “Aaron Boone said DJ LeMahieu was willing to begin working at 3B again, but the position had been too physically demanding for him. There were lengthy discussions yesterday and today between LeMahieu, Boone and Brian Cashman. LeMahieu didn’t ask for his release and is not happy with the outcome.”

Yankees GM Brian Cashman explained during a brief press conference why the Yankees’ roster configuration with DJ LeMahieu on the team was not something he could leave comfortably. A move needed to be made; a change needed to occur. Cashman stated firmly, “I made the decision that I thought was best for us.”
Parting ways with DJ definitely shifts attention towards the trade deadline. Is New York looking to go out and grab some players? Perhaps a solution for third and the pitching rotation? Cashman reveals,
“I’d certainly love to import a starter, some relievers…and an infielder as well, if possible. But that’s a long list. I’m not sure if this will be a deep deadline or not, so I don’t know how active we can be. But we will try to be active, I can tell you that, and we will try to import improvements. That’s the gig.
We have a really potent offense that’s one of the top run producers in the game, despite obviously the last six weeks. But it still ranks at that level.
We pursue options…ownership provides so much for us to do, but that doesn’t mean that we can do everything at any time. It comes down to the array of choices available to you, whether it’s a trade or free agent acquisition.
At some point, you may run out of how much money you’re spending. Some big log might be too much to add to the fire. Would you love to have an established situation that you plug and play and you’re not worried about it? Of course. But that’s not where we’re at.
Did we look in the winter? Of course we looked in the winter. Are we continuing to look? Yes, we’re continuing to look.”
So then, the Yankees are still on the lookout to make their team stronger. And in their minds, sadly removing LeMahieu was how they can achieve more strength down the road. Therefore, we wish the best to DJ and we will keenly look on to see what moves New York makes as the deadline looms.
