New York Liberty Re-Signed Ultra Talented Breanna Stewart

They call her “Stewie” but don’t let the affectionate nickname fool you. She’s a killer on the court and her ball skills cannot be denied. Obviously, the New York Liberty is well aware of this as they re-signed ultra talented Breanna Stewart. She signed with New York Liberty on Feb. 1, 2023. But it was the Seattle Storm who drafted her first overall in the 2016 WNBA draft. She spent seven seasons with the Storm.

Her season performance helped lead the Storm back to the playoffs for the first time in 3 years with the number 7 seed in the league. And she won the 2016 ESPY Award for Best Female Athlete. She also won Best Women’s College Basketball Player at the 2016 ESPYs. But in 2018 she really established herself as a superstar.

She helped the Storm get to the WNBA Finals for the first time since 2010. Stewart won Finals MVP, becoming the sixth player in league history to win both league MVP and Finals MVP in the same year. However, she has had an impact off the field as well. Becoming one of the 2020 Sports Illustrated Sports People of the Year for her activism. Her greatness was also recognized by the league. During the WNBA’s 25th season in 2021, Stewart was named to The W25 as one of the top 25 players in league history. So it’s no wonder that the Liberty snapped her up in 2023.

The team boasted, that is posted, about her re-signing on social media saying:

“The reigning WNBA Champion NY Liberty have re-signed 3x WNBA Champion, 3x Olympic gold medalist, 2x @WNBA  MVP, 2x WNBA Finals MVP, 6x All-WNBA First Team, 6x WNBA All-Star, 6x All-Defensive Team selection, W25 honoree, and the fastest 5000-point scorer in league history, @breannastewart.”

Jonathan Kolb, General Manager, New York Liberty also commented on the re-signing, saying:

“Bringing Stewie back to the Liberty was our top priority this offseason. Her impact on and off the court is immeasurable—she’s not only one of the best and most accomplished players in the world, but a leader whose relentless drive is foundational to the standard we continue to build upon in New York.”

New York’s 2025 regular season will tip-off at home on Saturday, May 17 against the Las Vegas Aces at Barclays Center. Unfortunately, they will be without Betnijah Laney-Hamilton who had surgery on her left knee to repair an acute meniscus injury. Her rehabilitation has begun but she is not expected to return to basketball activities before five to six months. Stewie will have her work cut out for her, as Laney-Hamilton played a pivotal role in the Liberty’s 2024 WNBA championship run.
