New York Knicks Part Ways With Head Coach Tom Thibodeau
When a team comes close to making the Finals, of course you expect to see some adjustments made on their part. They are close to the goal, close to competing for every season’s ultimate prize, a championship. However, firing the head coach in this scenario always leaves the sports community stunned (Denver Nuggets anyone). Yet, it has happened again this time in the Eastern Conference. On Tuesday, it was confirmed that the New York Knicks have parted ways with their head coach Tom Thibodeau.
A decision that has left numerous NBA executives shocked. The Knicks under Thibs reached the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time since 2000; after eliminating the Boston Celtics in a decisive Game 6 victory. This showed major progress, a beginning to ending the drought. Therefore, it would seem like you would want to keep all pieces in place.
However, New York has other plans. ESPN’s lead NBA insider Shams Charania reported on the Knicks HC situation stating,
“BREAKING: The New York Knicks are relieving Tom Thibodeau of his duties as head coach, sources tell ESPN. Thibodeau led the Knicks to their first East Finals in 25 years, made playoffs in 4 of 5 years and led Knicks to consecutive 50+ win seasons for first time since the 1990s.
The Knicks are singularly focused on their pursuit of a championship and believe a new voice will serve as the focus for the organization’s next step, sources said. After five seasons with the Knicks, Tom Thibodeau is out as head coach.”

This season the Knicks were a three seed and had racked up 51 wins. Moreover, as a coach for the franchise Thibs had a regular season record of 226-174 and was 2021’s Coach of the Year. Whether you liked him or not; he’s still a guy that helped bring the Knicks back to contention.
But now his era has come to an end. New York is moving on and hopes to bring on a new coach that can finish getting them to being able to hoist another trophy at long last. Although, one of the leagues oldest franchises, the Knicks have won two championships in 1970 and 1973. Meaning they have not won in 52 years. They desire to change this narrative soon.
