New York Knicks Expected To Hire Mike Brown As Their New Head Coach
It was a long and thorough search that often met with resistance from other teams. Many wondered why the team had fired the head coach they had, Tom Thibodeau. Considering he had led them to the playoffs and their first Eastern Conference finals appearance in 25 seasons. Nonetheless he was relieved of his duties and a search began in earnest for his replacement. Now it’s being reported that the New York Knicks are expected to hire Mike Brown as their new head coach.
One such report was made by ESPN NBA Insider Shams Charania who posted:
“BREAKING: The New York Knicks are expected to land on two-time NBA Coach of the Year Mike Brown as the franchise’s next head coach, sources tell ESPN.”
“Knicks president Leon Rose underwent a thorough process since the firing of Tom Thibdoeau a month ago. The Knicks requested permission for five NBA head coaches and were denied, then interviewed several available coaches and went through multi-round stages with candidates.”
According to CBS Sports reporter Bryan DeArdo, the Knicks reached out to longtime women’s coach at South Carolina Dawn Staley. One of the most accomplished players and coaches the women’s game has ever seen reportedly “impressed” in conversation with the Knicks.
South Carolina athletic director Jeremiah Donati recently confirmed that the Knicks have indeed reached out to Staley. “If I were them, I would have called her, too,” Donati told On3sports.
However, the team did not choose Staley to be their next head coach. Instead they are going with two-time NBA Head Coach of the Year Mike Brown. Brown had a second full interview with owner James Dolan on Tuesday this week. He was the only candidate that had multiple interviews with the team.
New York Knicks Expected To Hire Mike Brown As Their New Head Coach
Brown has a long and impressive coaching pedigree spanning over three decades. He is a four-time champion as a top assistant in Golden State and San Antonio under Steve Kerr and Gregg Popovich. And he has coached some of the biggest NBA superstars such as Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, LeBron James and Kobe Bryant. So having Brown should help to further enhance players like Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns.
Some of Browns other accomplishments were detailed in an ESPN report:
Brown, who has a combined record of 454-304 as a head coach with the Cavaliers, Lakers and Kings, won his first NBA Coach of the Year honor in 2009 with Cleveland. He won the award again in 2023 with Sacramento. Brown led the Cavs to an NBA Finals appearance in 2007, though Cleveland was swept by the Spurs in four games. So now he has the challenge of getting the Knicks back to the championship who haven’t won an NBA title since 1973.
Congratulations to head coach Mike Brown on his new position!
